At wit's end
I just built this comp in december 08. Ever since I've been having problems with graphic drivers. I am so going back to Nvidia after this...anywho I have a ATI Radeon HD 4850.
I know for sure it's not the monitor. I just did 6 hours of work trying to figure it out. Cleaned/dusted it. Cleaned out old drivers. Tried 3 different drivers multiple times each. The newest one from their website, the one that came with it, and the omega one. I am getting several different types of errors. The "ati2dvag display driver has stopped...", graphical anomalies (like 3 red bars and distortive effects) even in safe mode sometimes, and finally it will lose connection...like literally the screen goes blank, the monitor says its no longer getting the signal but I can still hear say music playing indicating its working fine otherwise. Like right now everything is working perfectly. But if I go into a game I get one or more errors and have to restart. And the really annoying thing is that half the time I have to re restart because it all loads up normally but then just as its about to load the desktop it loses signal. This is really some strange random stuff. I can't figure it out. Help! PS This is the omega driver I was talking about. http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati_winxp.php Also, the reason I'm thinking driver and not video card is that I can go into safe mode and uninstall the driver, and then reboot and it works fine (besides the fact it doesn't have a driver anyway). BIOS updates & drivers are unfortunately your only options.
Is there no return policy in the store where you bought it? Then again, december has passed by quite a while ago I know I have alot of laptops at work that get ati2dvag bluescreens. I curse the day HP put ATI cards in their laptops.

Why didn't you RMA the card? NewEgg may still take it back. It's pretty much guaranteed a defective videocard by the sounds of it.

I'm running a Sapphire 4850 1gig right now, when I first got it I was having just about the same problems, mostly with games, I tried I dunno how many drivers including the omega's. Right now I'm running June's cats but I found you seem to have the run the WHOLE package including CCC ( catalyst control panel) and not jut the bare drivers. Also use Driver Cleaner after a cat uninstall before installing the next set of cats.
Personally I love ATI video cards, used them in many systems I've built over the years so having this set of problems when I got the 4850 surprised me. I have used NVidia a few times, mostly in other peoples computers I've built, but I always seem to have problems with them just not this bad. |

I'm running XP.
Quote:
When the drivers are uninstalled, is the computer still using the video card in a basic way? Or is there some onboard vid card in all motherboards it uses? Cause like I said, besides playing games and it being a bit slower, if I leave the drivers uninstalled it works fine. |

If there's a picture, it's using the videocard. It's not utilizing the actual "hardware" of the card unless the drivers are installed though.

Thanks.
Well after cleaning out every ati driver to an extreme and completely reinstalling the whole catalyst package I have dropped the other odd problems and am only getting the ati2dvag infinite loop blue screen of death. Not that its really an improvement but it narrows it down a bit... It happens somewhat randomly but always if I try to play a game. EDIT: It was the video card.
