change address bar auto search firefox
My daughter decided to smash the enter button a few times when i was re-installing winamp. Needless to say I had to remove a toolbar, and now when I put in address bar a word / phrase instead of auto searching google, it uses the winamp search (yeah who knew they even had one).
Now I am talking about the actual address bar, not the search bar on the right. |

I didn't know that the Awesomebar's behaviour could be modified.
First, I'd try checking for any extensions or add-ons that Winamp may have auto-installed. If that comes up empty, open up about:config (just type it in the address bar and click 'I'll be careful') and in the Filter field at the top type Winamp. Hopefully it'll show you what Winamp's done and you can change it back. I'm going to do a bit of research in the meantime and will come back if I find anything pertinent.

What has likely happened is that when you installed Winamp, you opted to have the default search replaced...
The great thing about FF is that all you have to do to fix it is simply create a new profile...Add a '-p' to the end of your Firefox shortcut path...You can create a new profile, copy over your bookmarks, extensions, etc. and keep going...That should take a few minutes, and will at the very least allow you to have default settings in Firefox so that you can uninstall or undo whatever Winamp did w/o going through the hassle of uninstalling it, and then reinstalling it and so forth... |

Type in “about:config” in the address bar of firefox, then type in “keyword.url” to search for that configuration key. Right-click on the only thing left in the list, and choose "reset". Voila, back to Google I'm Feeling Lucky.
Of course, Winamp might try to reset it next time it starts, so check the options in Winamp as well.

Indeed red, that works, but depending on the version of FF he has, he may get this:
Which...Of course, is probably true, hahaha...Plus, we can't be sure of the problem as identified being w/FF or the Winamp install..."My daughter decided to smash the enter button a few times...." Isn't exactly great for diagnostics...I opted for a safer way to test, and should your fix not work, he would have to do anyway...I'm a pretty savvy Firefox user, and never go into the about:config, so... 2 birds as they say... |

I used to blow my profiles out all the time (I run nightly versions, since 0.3 or 0.4). But that can take a lot of reconfiguration. Yours is "safer", but a bit more nuclear. Let's try to fix it with the screwdriver before we pull out the thermonuclear devices.

I'm with Redlemon. Which, incidentally, is why I offered almost the exact same advice.

I decided to live on the edge.
Was hoping to avoid it, but decided i can always reinstall firefox if i screw it up. Found 1 other spot, besides keyword.url, changed both, and it is working perfect now. Thank you all for the ideas. |
