Maybe you know.
Yesterday, I put my computer in stand-by mode, forgot about it and disconnected it from the power source to plug the wires into my gf's new computer to install stuff on it. When I turned my computer back on, everything worked fine except I couldn't use any input devices (USB keyboard, PS/2 keyboard, USB mouse, USB tablet). I couldn't get past the log-in screen at boot-up. This morning, nothing worked again, except for the PS/2 keyboard. Once Windows loaded, it installed drivers for the USB components again and everything is working now. Any idea what might have caused that?

That's a good question. I honestly don't know what might cause that, but I've had something similar happen with an external hard drive.

If it's Windows XP, that's pretty normal. XP is ridden with bugs with standby and hibernation modes.
|
I'd even go to say that USB has interesting issues when not disconnected properly. There's a thread here about those kinds of issues.

I had this happen to my laptop on its own. no input devices/cds/usb/keyboard/mouse were all out.
I removed the battery, the cable, and let it sit for about a minute or so and then plugged it back in. was good to go after that. WHY it happened? who knows. |
One of the many technological mysteries that I refer to as "computer magic." I mean, I know them pretty well inside and out..but sometimes there's things that can't be explained or replicated after the ol reboot troubleshooting.

Used to call that "FM" in the Air Force. As in: "Why is the Radar suddenly working again?" "I don't know. FM."
FM = Fu*kin' Magic. I've had numerous USB issues over the years. Rarely found the reason why as the problems usually fixed themselves pretty quickly. Still much better than Serial and Parallel ports, though! |
Alright, guess I'm not the only one then.
It gave me a pretty good scare since I need to use the computer this week quite extensively for projects. |
