DELL XPS replacement

My brother's XPS has had the much reported verticle line affliction on his screen.
Dell have agreed to replace the screen with a reburbished one. (wow)
After 3 visits, 2 screens, 1 video card, 2 LCD connecting cables, and 2 LCD screen inverters over the last 2 weeks, they are saying they can't fix it, and are offering a replacement
Quote: ...we are having a hard time to get the parts to replace the LCD. I am looking to replace the whole system with a newer model since the system that we are trying to fix is not supported in Australia. I also would like to set your expectation about the system replacement, the replacement would be one of the current shipping laptop’s of Dell, however the specifications would be equivalent or higher with the XPS Gen 2. Please Let me know if this would be ok with you end quote.

Can anybody offer any suggestions, or should we take the deal? The extended warranty expires in March, so the machine is 3 years old...

Um, seems like a no brainer. Back up your files and make the exchange. Anytime you can trade your 3 year old laptop for a freshly shipped one, go for it.

Just backup your files on dvd's or an external HD, and take the deal!

Dell is usually pretty good about customer service.. the best I've dealt with. If something isn't right, they'll try until they MAKE it right. For example, I found an ad in the paper for a computer but when I put the code into their website, it didn't work. I called the company, and they offered to give me a BETTER computer at the same price, plus a monitor. And they really did.

I say take it!

Thanks everyone. It's not that we didn't want to take the deal.
Having had little to do with Dell, I figured asking others would reveal possible pitfalls that may arise from taking the offer.

Dell is awesome with customer support. I haven't had a bad experience yet.

Finally got confirmation, that they are replacing with a brand new XPS M1730 version: #R541224AU

I have another question but.

They supply the unit on the remaining warranty of the old unit only, which expired last week... What to do?

Quote:
NOTE: This is on an outright exchange basis and hence will continue the same warranty conditions and expiration dates as per initial purchase.

: end quote

Cheers

Phone them up, see if they offer an extended warranty. Tell them you just got this one a week before the warranty ran out and see what they say. If they say sorry, then I believe you can get some sort of 3rd party insurance or if you paid with VISA a few years ago, maybe that card has the extra year warrenty built in on all purchases.

If that doesn't work, don't sweat it, you got a new super computer for free. Your other one was already an antique by the way computer experts talk...every 4-6 months or so, computers get so much better and faster. Jeez, mine is only 2yrs. old and 4 months after I bought it, the price went down around $300 and the hard drive size doubled, speed got faster, etc. Damn.

I' m no expert but have fun with your new toy anyways.

Computers are not only getting faster, but more reliable as well. Likely by the time the new one goes to hell, you might be ready for some new gear. I'd take the (slightly peculiar) deal from Dell.

Incidentally, i've not herad about any of your original problems before. I have a M1530 and it's been working great. Well, except for Vista, it's working great.

Well, the beast has arrived.
I had read about how heavy it was. It's all true. Weighs a bloody ton!

But. SOOOO noice!

Was supposed to be twin 8800 GTX nvidias' but actually came with 9800's
Was supposed to be 320 G HDD at 7200rpm, but acually 2 x 320's
Was supposed to be 4g's of RAM, but only got 3.

We asked for, and got the "downgrade" to XP (sp3)
They include the DELL branded XP disc, and a Vista disc.

Only unpacked it today, but so far, very impressed..

If you are using 32 bit Windows it will only use 3 Gb of ram so there could be 4 Gb installed.

Nice rig btw.
