Putting desktop computer together

Yes, another such thread :-)

The friend's 15 yo son wants a game machine and I know this not.
I believe it is a good system for the price.
He will be quite able to do homework, internet tasks, and play some games but not those needing the latest and greatest hardware.
What do you think of these choices using one local store.

The videocard is not very good. It will have trouble playing the latest games on Low settings. The rest looks good.

I wanted to make the same comment, but because I'm not the video card guru esp, the ATI side, (nvidia fanboy here) I deferred for the master to speak first.

Thank you.
Would you please look at this site and suggest a video card for this system?

I would add that I have had better luck with Seagate than Western Digital lately. The bigger (>320g) WD drives failed rather early, whereas the Seagates have been reliable.

If you wanted to upgrade the video card, what kind of budget do you have?

Thanks for your concern shakran.
WD drives have served me very well for over 10 years. That would be at least 10 drives.
I have also installed them in other people's computers. They are all still working fine.
I am using four 360gig drives (older ATA) and one terabyte drive (USB) at this time.

Well biznatch, look at the processor & mainboard and tell me what should work well with them.
That's what I have trouble figuring out :-) Last video card I bought was for AGP buss and not for gaming but for watching videos. In selecting components I usually look for the price jump.
Meaning performance/cost ratio. The ones I have selected are about two years old and are cheap. If it makes sense to spend >100 Euros on the video card with these parts, ok. If it makes it possible to play new games then the young man will be happy.

Yeah, looking at the Motherboard's specs I'm having trouble figuring out where the PCIe slots are mentioned, if they are.

I just over the 100E mark. the one that is under Point of View, I don't know that manfac, so I'm inclined to not recommend it.

Two cards have the same features but the more expensive one is quiet - no fan.
We won't be overclocking so is this ok? I plan to include one large case fan.
Considering the other components on this system does it make sense to use this card or go for the much cheaper one, the ASUS EN7300GT. Will he be able to play games using the slower card?

those aren't the same Mobo, slightly different builds, that is the reason for the discrepancy.

M2N-MX SE
M2N-X Plus

the 7300 is really light on the abilities compared to the 9600. the silent operation is nice, but it's a 20E premium, too expensive in my book. the 9600 will "last" longer than the 7300 for game playing.

seems like a solid machine. i'm still partial to the more expensive 9600, especially as the new video cards coming out this year will push the 8x series into the 7x territory of obsolesence.

but, he can always get a new vid card for a birthday/xmas present in the future.

In a year the bus speed goes up again :-)
This mainboard does not support PCI-e2x only 1.???
I forgot the proper...words. So a really fast videocard is wasted.
To select a modern video card a modern motherboard and DDR3 memory should also be selected. Right?
I thought this card was the best match for the other components.
Thank you for your input, Cynthetiq.
