Will MS Office for Vista

Work on XP home edition?

allaboutmusic 01-03-2009 02:45 PM

Do you mean Microsoft Office 2007? I believe it will work on Service Pack 2 onwards.

Vigilante 01-03-2009 03:06 PM

I'm using it on XP now no problem. SP3, but it should work fine on SP2.

MS Office is not designed for Vista; it is designed for Windows.

From the MS Office website: The 2007 Microsoft Office system programs client is a 32-bit application and can run on a Windows 64-bit platform (Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Vista) but there may be some feature limitations as noted in the system requirements below .It will run on XP, Server 2003 and Vista.

I'm running Office 2007 on an XP Home machine and I wish I never upgraded. Office 2007 sucks, just too much of everything

Vigilante 01-03-2009 10:30 PM

Agreed, Craven.

See doc, I just skip the buzzwords - platform, application, client - and just say "yes, it works, and I know because I'm doing it". Users like that. Trust me I know LOL

I was extremely resistant to 2007 when we first upgraded at work. After three months, I have to grudgingly admit there are some things I'm beginning to like about it. I personally think they changed too much too fast. If you have 2003 and need to be able to use 2007 files, download the compatibility pack or download OpenOffice. :)

Hurray for OpenOffice.org :)

Every user is different. You supply information your way, and I'll supply it my way, thank you very much.

As to Office 2007 being too complicated, with too much of everything: all versions of Office are complicated, with many options; it is simply the new interface that seems to throw everyone off. If you are able to adapt to new things easily, then the new Office suite is quite impressive. If not, then there is no reason to upgrade from the 2003 suite, as it is perfectly acceptable.

Touchy touchy. Sometimes having a little sense of humor (or even pretending, if you are really that dry) is a good thing.

I have 2007 running on an XP machine at work, no issues.

At first I was annoyed with the changes from 2003 to 2007. The biggest change was a switch from drop down menus to the ribbons. Once I adjusted to the changes I liked it a lot. It also helps to add a lot of commonly used functions (especially if they aren't on the ribbons) to the quick toolbar.

It really helps to have a widescreen monitor (or just a large monitor). Some of the ribbons have a lot of information on them.

OK, another dumb question is Open Office compatible with MS Office?

My daughter got a new laptop with a new copy of Office and I have nothing which is my better option?

Vigilante 01-05-2009 07:19 PM

Open office will generally open all files MS office creates. There may or may not be some small functionality loss, but I am not sure right now. My current job means I pretty much don't touch any open source software in a work environment.
