Desperate for Advice re: PC's issues with Graphics Accelerator

So I finally rebuilt my custom computer from scratch, got it working, and popped in two Geforce 9600 GT graphics cards attached via sli bridge.
My frustration comes from its immense amount of lagging when I play games. I can't even play Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2 without disabling graphics acceleration halfway, and eliminating all anisotropic filtering and game graphics detail. If I don't, the game either has moments where it freezes, or I get the BSOD.
I don't get it! I've tried a couple of things, like uninstall and reinstall the video card drivers, update windows (I'm running XP Pro, I'm afraid I'll have too many issues with Vista and "software compatibility"), and tweak some settings within Nvidia's control panel.
My friend suggested upgrading from Direct 9 to 10, but, it doesn't seem to be compatible with XP? *shrugs*
I don't know. I need advice. I just want to play video games! And I should be able to!
I'll post details of the PC's specs in my next post.

Yeah DX10 is vista only.

-Go to nvidia.com and get the latest drivers for XP and SLi.
-Get the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard from the chipset manufacturer (ie. intel or nvidia). CPU-Z (cpuid.com) can tell you what chipset you have if you don't know already.
-Make sure the game is compatible with SLI. I don't see why it wouldn't be, but if an answer doesn't pop up here on that, google it.
-If there are any SLI settings in the BIOS (not sure honestly, never messed with SLi) then make sure they are configured correctly.

dammit, I knew it. Hmmm
I've grabbed all the latest drivers...checked and double-checked that.
I'll check the chipset drivers for the mobo, last time I tried it didn't connect right.
The game is definitely compatible with SLi. Besides, I have this problem with ALL games. I just mentioned KotOR 2 because I'm currently re-playing it on the PC.
No settings that I found in the BIOS for Sli...unless they're super secret! :P hehe.

Ok, so, Direct 3D is simply not available on this new video card driver I installed september 17th. It was a driver update I found using windows update....but obviously is incomplete.

perhaps I should do a driver rollback?

Or should I go hunting for ALL available drivers for my video cards and pick amongst them???

Heh,I think I solved my own problem. You see, TWO Geforce 9600 GT graphics cards were made. One by Nvidia, another by Asus. I have the Asus version..its a new card on the market.
Clearly, I shouldn't have trusted that Windows update for that driver...I'll put the driver on from asus, and see if that works.

Found your problem: never NEVER use windows update drivers. They will hose the system nearly every time. Seriously, I am not exaggerating. For a LAN card, no sweat. For anything more important in the system, never use windows update. Uncheck the boxes and forever ignore drivers from that site.

Check the PCB (printed circuit board, for future reference) of each card and see if they are a relative match. ASUS likes to deviate from reference designs just enough to be annoying, so those cards may never match up, or they might. I just depends on how far they have deviated on their design, if at all.

haha, yup, for sure. I got a little comfortable with windows update...at the time I had two hours worth of system updates...so this one didn't seem out of the ordinary. Now I know better. ^_^
Everything is working very well now. I can max out all the graphics features on my games with no problems.
Now I have to figure out why one of my fans likes to buzz a lot when it spins faster...stupid thing.
