Best Multimedia/Buisness Phone
 

What do you think is the best multimedia and business phone that will be available within the next few months.

Obvious candidates could be one of the following:

Iphone, BlackBerry Bold, BlackBerry Storm, HTC Touch Pro, HTC Dream, and others.

Obviously all of these phones are very capable phones and the best one will depend on ones personal needs and preferences. So which cell phone do you think has the best overall features?

The cell phone market is wide open.

What is hot news today is old news tomorrow.

iPhone is obviously THE HOTTEST selling phone right now, however from a pure business standpoint you have to go with Blackberry, they are made more for a business feel, not to mention most of them can do anything an iPhone can do anyway.

Mention multimedia, and the crown has to go to the iPhone. Its screen and interface is a pure work of art, and the app store IS the future.

In the 3G iPhone, they've done a lot of business-friendly things, including Exchange support. Evidently iPhone is penetrating the Enterprise at a very high rate these days.

IPhone has a great web browser and great mp3 player but is lacking some key business features like copy & paste and tethering. Also the digital keyboard is less than ideal and could use a revamp.

I'm considering an iphone but those lacking features and the 3G problems are pretty big deal breakers for me. Unfortunately none of the other devices seem to have it all either but are definitely comparable. I'm still hoping the BlackBerry Storm or the HTC Dream will have what I'm looking for when the details come out.

It trumps most phones out right now despite being about a year old (with recent revisions).

I'll give you Tethering.

I argue well-integrated applications shouldn't need copy and paste. What, you're going to do spreadsheet work on your iPhone? C'mon. A "dial" button that integrates the contacts app to the phone app is really all you need on a smart phone, right? I've really never even thought about needing copy and paste--even on my Treo that I've used for five years.

Tell you the truth, the predictive speller does a GREAT job. At first I sweatted hitting the right virtual buttons, but these days I'm sloppy as hell (and FAST as hell) and I let the software figure out what I mean, and like 99% of the time, it's right!

What specifically are you looking for? What is your list of absolute requirements, features you would like but aren't essential, and features you could live without.

I don't own, nor have I messed with an iPhone to comment on the app store, but it is just iTunes for your phone, am I correct?

I know my old Nextel phone had a HUGE homebrew community, ring tones, wall papers etc, all stuff I could do myself with the USB cable and a loader (which was free)

I understand some of the stuff on the app store is pay, and some is free, but me personally would much rather have a rather large homebrew community with free apps and support than apple dictating what is out there.

Well, there's one of those too.

App Store has literally thousands of free applications available right now, and thousands more that run from $0.99 to $20 or so. And jailbreaking the iPhone is easy (a download-an-app-and-click-a-button proposition) that gives access to hundreds more free homebrew apps.

I wouldn't buy a phone that doesn't have an open software platform. Or "open-ish", like the App Store is. Yes, Apple vets every app that goes into the App Store, but they post dozens of new ones a day. It's not like they're being all that tight about it.

I'm planning on asking for the BB Storm when it comes out. I'm tying this on the BB 8700, which is pretty good but could be better. And RB, I do some spreadsheet work on this from time to time. That's how a lot of the information I deal with is transmitted and being able to read and manipulate the data is important.

So far my coworkers with iPhones are unimpressed with its ability to deal with the kind of stuff we see every day. One of my friends sent his back to corporate after 2 weeks because he got so frustrated.

Fair enough. I mean, I guess there's no one right phone for everyone. I know a guy (one of the many iPhone owners I know) who completely hates his. No accounting for taste, I guess. ;)

I'm a BB girl. Love my 8330. :hearts: But I can see where the iPhone might be preferred.

One thing that really annoys me about the iphone is the fact that it only goes with the AT&T service. Where i live that service is horrible lots of dead zones. where verizon has worked flawlessly. Wish they would open up the fancy phones to be used with any service.

Only real features i would want in a phone would be simple things like a nice camera and a mp3 player with a lot of memory and is able to use a normal set of headphones using a standard jack no fancy pants jack where you have to use there headphones or a adapter of some sort. Beyond that any extra features are nice but not that important.

To avoid this from turning into just an Iphone thread what do you think of the other phones? Anyone have any criticisms or praise for them?

For me here are some of the most important features in order of importance

#1 Email, the ability to send and receive email. The phone must be able to connect to two different accounts and tell me when either of them gets mail. I don't want to have to switch between my accounts to see if I have any new mail.

#2 Functional interface, a feature doesn't have an easy to use interface then it is as if the phone doesn't have that feature. I'm not going to take 3 minutes to do something that should take 3 seconds.

#3 Good connectivity

#4 Clean, easy to use, fully functional web browser

#5 ssh client and ability to tether (for free)

#6 Good mp3 functionality (bluetooth stereo would be a plus)

Like I said, N95.

It doesn't look like the N95 has a full qwerty keypad.

Here's another vote for n95, best phone I've ever owned, I'm able to connect the phone directly to a projector and go on with the presentation, it's T9 is great and learn your words (I'm faster with the N95 than with a bluetooth keyboard), the web browser is amazing and has some nice stuff like searching in the page, multiple windows, rss reader, etc..., besides, it is DLNA certified and sharing, streaming and controlling all my media is a breeze, I even use it for my torrent downloads, there's not one thing you can't do with this phone is you know what you're doing, Oh! and it's bluetooth is not crippled like that of the IPhone.
It controlls all my email accounts and I'm able to schedule which days, between wich time frame and at whcih interval I wan't to be notified of new emails.
With all due respect to iPhone lovers, the iPhone is not a business phone, get over it, it may be a very intuitive and easy to use phone, but it is too limited and crippled. The only thing the n95 is lacking IMHO, is a VGA touch screen.

Yeah, the latest line of N phones are not worth the price over the previous versions. Minimal improvements that do not justify the $200+ price difference.

Got myself a SonyEricsson G900. No qwerty keyboard true, but still a very good phone with a nice price tag.
* Has a competent email client built in but lots of third party ones are available as well.
* Has 3G and WLAN
* Uses Opera as webbrowser (But of course you can use Opera Mini, @Web or others as well)
* Good multimedia capabilities, and if you need more (Such as support for ogg-files) CorePlayer has a version for it.
* A ported putty can be used to ssh
* Touch screen as well as real buttons

I recommend giving it a try. It's not perfect but IMHO well worth the money
