way to allocate bandwidth?
so I have a home network with a router that is connected through an RJ-45 wire to a desktop computer and connected wirelessly to a laptop computer. the problem is is that I am often taking up bandwidth with my laptop with utorrent so when my mom wants to search the web it is really slow on the desktop.
is there any way to tell my router to give the desktop priority in the bandwidth it uses? |

I've not gotten into it yet, but if you have a router that can do QoS you should be able to give her computer priority if requested.
One of these days I'll get my setup right so that Skogafoss stops complaining that I'm lagging her instant casts.

You could temporarily set up a download schedule in uTorrent so that during hours she normally uses the computer it will limit the bandwidth while at night go rip roaring full steam ahead downloading.

With my router I can set rules that depending on the type of traffic will prioritize according to what importance I assign them. Xbox Live traffic > internet traffic > torrent traffic...etc.
Likewise, inside Utorrent itself, you can always designate the torrent traffic as "low" priority as well as set the download / upload speed by right-clicking the torrent in the window and using the pop-up menu.
