Anyone upgraded to SP3 yet for Win XP?
Since I forgot all about this until Wyodiver33 talked about Windows 7, I can say that I have upgraded my machines, as well as many others' machines without issue as of yet. Whatever problems there were, I have not seen them again. And yes, Windows 7 is good.

I have not done it. But my computer reset itself last night while I was sleeping (the noise it made actually woke me up, I am a light sleeper). When I woke up I had a message that said it restarted to install updates.... how do I check it SP3 put itself on here?

I haven't upgraded yet. There was an update I installed recently, but my System still says Service Pack 2. I wanted to because of what I've heard, but now I'm hesitant if there are problems. PC Pitstop survey finds:
Apparently 24.6% of those surveyed experienced noticeable problems, and 75% of those weren't able to resolve it. EDIT: Woah, I just read that Symantec has warned users to disable their protection before installing SP3 or risk crippling their computer. At a go, Microsoft. Yet another reason* why I'm glad I switched to Mac for my primary computing. *If Vista woes weren't enough....

Those aren't encouraging statistics.
@ blahblah454: To install Sp3 you have to go to windows update and select it yourself. There is a welcome screen asking you if you want to install it. I have clicked no. Another way to check is right click on the My Computer icon and select properties. You will see "Service Pack ..." usually 2. |

I have upgraded about a week ago, so far the only probs are windows automatic updates doesnt work, no biggie I can do that manually. Otherwise nothing bigtime, I've checked the Event Viewer and nothing else seems to be wrong. All apps seem to be working normally........

Just checked, I have SP2 installed. I have no intention of installing SP3 as I find nothing wrong with SP2, it seems like the only time I really have a problem with the computer is when software needs to update.

I made the upgrade the same day it went out and haven't had any problems with it, I've even felt an improvement on speed, but apart from that, it's all the same.

Sorry, didn't know of that thread and I got an email yeasterday from M$ reminding me of the "pull", rest is history.
I'm not going to upgrade any of my production machines to XP SP3 (nor Vista) any time soon. Slight side step, I have seen too many of my customers having problems with laptops running Vista on a domain. (more and/or worse problems if the HD is slow). Yours Zweiblumen

I am really glad that I did not upgrade to SP3. Two of my colleagues with laptops exactly like mine, recently had their systems imaged to an earlier state---this included Automatic Updates. My warnings of what could happen, were actually premonitions of what did happen. Both their computers would boot to a black screen. One of them had the Ultimate Boot Disc, but this was useless, except confirmed my suspicion that it was SP3 on their systems.
In short we had to use a BIOS option to search for hard drive errors, which seemed to fix whatever problems were also having before we could install Kubuntu. Full Story click to show |

I've been running SP3 on both my personal laptop and my work computer for a couple of months now. No problems at all.
With the laptop I created a slipstreamed version of the XP install that included SP3. It is a fresh install. The computer at work was updated via the downloadable version of SP3 from Microsoft Volume Licensing. I did not disable Symantec AV before applying the SP. |

You seems to be the lucky one, vanblah. I have to conclude it is incompatible with certain hardware configurations. There is too much circumstantial evidence pointing to a problem with SP3. There is now a third machine that failed: another friend here in my dorms installed it on her desktop computer, and her computer does not boot anymore. I don't know what magic needs to be done for successful install, but three failures now and the only thing that links them all was an SP3 upgrade. I know I will not upgrade to SP3.

The only problem I had with SP3 was with Windows Update. After installing SP3 Windows Update was totally crippled. Wasn't a big deal as I quickly found a fix on Microsoft's web site. Other than that, SP3 has been just fine for me. I've been using Windows 7 for the last couple of months. I like it a lot. I still have XP Pro SP3 in a dual boot environment, but rarely go back to XP. XP was a great OS for, what, 8 years? Had it's problems, sure. But it's still better than Vista in a lot of ways, IMHO. Windows 7 is shaping up to be what Vista should have been.

If you really want to be adventurous, give Windows 7 a try. It's worth it, trust me. It's all I really use now and I will definitely be buying it when it ships. Glad I bypassed Vista.
