Anyone upgraded to SP3 yet for Win XP?

Since I forgot all about this until Wyodiver33 talked about Windows 7, I can say that I have upgraded my machines, as well as many others' machines without issue as of yet. Whatever problems there were, I have not seen them again. And yes, Windows 7 is good.

I have not done it. But my computer reset itself last night while I was sleeping (the noise it made actually woke me up, I am a light sleeper). When I woke up I had a message that said it restarted to install updates.... how do I check it SP3 put itself on here?

"System" under "Control Panel."

I haven't upgraded yet. There was an update I installed recently, but my System still says Service Pack 2. I wanted to because of what I've heard, but now I'm hesitant if there are problems.

PC Pitstop survey finds:
  • The most frequently cited problems were Internet Explorer lock-ups, reboots, system crashes, and failure of XP to start.
  • Only 5.5% of users having problems had called Microsoft to troubleshoot the problems.
  • 37% of those surveyed decided to upgrade to XP SP3, despite the known issues.

Apparently 24.6% of those surveyed experienced noticeable problems, and 75% of those weren't able to resolve it.

EDIT: Woah, I just read that Symantec has warned users to disable their protection before installing SP3 or risk crippling their computer. :shakehead:

At a go, Microsoft. Yet another reason* why I'm glad I switched to Mac for my primary computing.

*If Vista woes weren't enough....

Those aren't encouraging statistics.

@ blahblah454:
To install Sp3 you have to go to windows update and select it yourself. There is a welcome screen asking you if you want to install it. I have clicked no. Another way to check is right click on the My Computer icon and select properties. You will see "Service Pack ..." usually 2.

DaveOrion 05-30-2008 04:42 PM

I have upgraded about a week ago, so far the only probs are windows automatic updates doesnt work, no biggie I can do that manually. Otherwise nothing bigtime, I've checked the Event Viewer and nothing else seems to be wrong. All apps seem to be working normally........

blahblah454 05-30-2008 05:26 PM

Just checked, I have SP2 installed. I have no intention of installing SP3 as I find nothing wrong with SP2, it seems like the only time I really have a problem with the computer is when software needs to update.

MexicanOnABike 05-30-2008 05:28 PM

in the last week, I've seen most computers at work have problems and it was after installing SP3. so ya, fuck that. I will not install it on my computers at home.

ironman 05-31-2008 05:04 AM

I made the upgrade the same day it went out and haven't had any problems with it, I've even felt an improvement on speed, but apart from that, it's all the same.

sapiens 05-31-2008 06:12 AM

I made the upgrade. I think I did before it even went out officially (via a lifehacker.com link). I haven't had any problems. My laptop still takes forever to boot up - no change better or worse.

Wyodiver33 06-02-2008 08:08 PM

Have adopted SP3, no problems.

Jove 06-03-2008 01:59 AM

Installed SP3 on about 60 computers at work and had no problems.

Wyodiver33 06-03-2008 04:36 AM

MS and Vista can kiss my ass.

Shauk 06-03-2008 10:17 AM

yeah I don't know, you can create a SP3 iso and install a fresh copy of xp sp3 too if you want to just back up relevant info beforehand.

usually the best bet.

as far as vista, i've not had any real problems.

Zweiblumen 06-04-2008 10:24 AM

M$ has anounced sales of Windows XP will end June 30. (2008).

Hain 06-04-2008 10:37 AM

Old news. TFP Thread.

Did you happen to upgrade to it yet, Zweiblumen?

Zweiblumen 06-05-2008 02:10 PM

Sorry, didn't know of that thread and I got an email yeasterday from M$ reminding me of the "pull", rest is history.
I'm not going to upgrade any of my production machines to XP SP3 (nor Vista) any time soon.
Slight side step, I have seen too many of my customers having problems with laptops running Vista on a domain. (more and/or worse problems if the HD is slow).

Can you point me to a reliable guide to do this?

Agree completely. This is why my university refused to upgrade to Vista.

Done since May 3, no problems since then.

Hain 07-27-2008 02:12 AM

I am really glad that I did not upgrade to SP3. Two of my colleagues with laptops exactly like mine, recently had their systems imaged to an earlier state---this included Automatic Updates. My warnings of what could happen, were actually premonitions of what did happen. Both their computers would boot to a black screen. One of them had the Ultimate Boot Disc, but this was useless, except confirmed my suspicion that it was SP3 on their systems.

In short we had to use a BIOS option to search for hard drive errors, which seemed to fix whatever problems were also having before we could install Kubuntu.

I've been running SP3 on both my personal laptop and my work computer for a couple of months now. No problems at all.

With the laptop I created a slipstreamed version of the XP install that included SP3. It is a fresh install.

The computer at work was updated via the downloadable version of SP3 from Microsoft Volume Licensing. I did not disable Symantec AV before applying the SP.

Hain 07-27-2008 06:34 AM

You seems to be the lucky one, vanblah. I have to conclude it is incompatible with certain hardware configurations. There is too much circumstantial evidence pointing to a problem with SP3. There is now a third machine that failed: another friend here in my dorms installed it on her desktop computer, and her computer does not boot anymore. I don't know what magic needs to be done for successful install, but three failures now and the only thing that links them all was an SP3 upgrade. I know I will not upgrade to SP3.

Fotzlid 07-27-2008 08:15 AM

I loaded SP3 a few weeks back. Haven't had any problems.

spindles 07-27-2008 07:21 PM

sp3 running here for a week or so, without any issues at all.

Jimellow 07-29-2008 04:42 AM

What does SP3 do?

I'm running it, and gather it installed during one of the semi-automatic updates... But I've no idea what features it comes with or why it's been released?

I have been running SP3 for a while now (sense it went live) and I have yet (knocks on wood) to have any problems.

LtTragg 08-12-2008 01:31 PM

I had a theory that SP3 was an attempt to make XP so unusable that everyone would just install Vista. Nevertheless, I installed SP3 on my new Dell and so far no problems at all.

blahblah454 02-28-2009 03:25 PM

Just thought that I would resurrect this to see how everyone is doing with SP3 who installed it. I have yet to make the plunge.

Wyodiver33 02-28-2009 03:56 PM

The only problem I had with SP3 was with Windows Update. After installing SP3 Windows Update was totally crippled. Wasn't a big deal as I quickly found a fix on Microsoft's web site. Other than that, SP3 has been just fine for me. I've been using Windows 7 for the last couple of months. I like it a lot. I still have XP Pro SP3 in a dual boot environment, but rarely go back to XP. XP was a great OS for, what, 8 years? Had it's problems, sure. But it's still better than Vista in a lot of ways, IMHO. Windows 7 is shaping up to be what Vista should have been.

Xerxys 03-01-2009 10:32 AM

No problems here, installed SP3 as soon as it went live.

catback 03-01-2009 11:03 AM

SP3 going good here, I too was skeptical at first but I decided to be adventuresome and take a trip to the dark side...It really wasn't all that dark

Wyodiver33 03-01-2009 11:32 AM

If you really want to be adventurous, give Windows 7 a try. It's worth it, trust me. It's all I really use now and I will definitely be buying it when it ships. Glad I bypassed Vista.
