Does Anybody Have This??

Hey guys, I am looking for Symantec norton GHOST. An old version that was actually a GENERAL HARDWARE ORIENTED SYSTEM. I think it's version 8.2 but it was released a long time ago, like 97. Heres how it works, you save it on a diskette, (remember those?? :orly: ) get another diskette then create a boot diskette using XP's boot disk creator (You know, right click and the whole shebang, I know I'm going old school on you but be patient).:surprised:

If you don't want to save it on your diskette, you can save it right beneath your C drive, its faster that way since diskettes are slow like.... anyway, once you've rebooted your comp, and your in DOS mode and you have the ......

C:\>_

..... flashing, you type in the name of your file, GHOST in my case and voila. The reason I shamelessly ask you guys to PM me this 1.44MB possibly illegal file is because I lost mine. Please find me this EXE, whoever has it.

YES!!!

Thankyou.!!!!!!!!

Thanks again but you wont believe this, in my fit of desperation yesterday I downloaded Norton 6.2 from oldversions.com, It worked, I have the file. So I went through the motions, tore my room apart looking for a functioning diskette because I'm too lazy to learn how to create a custom boot CD. Im running a dell Optiplex by the way.... so, found a diskette, created the boot disk, copied the file onto it, rebooted and...............

DOS mode does not see any of my hard drives.

Damn. That blows. How do either of these things work? You might have better luck with nLite than PING- I know my roommate last year used, I am positive it was nLite, to make a doped-out WinXP installation CD.

Xerxys 04-02-2008 03:11 PM

Just trying PING. I do hope its a ghosting app though, I hate having to look for dos for windows 98, you know, the one that actually recognises the CD-DVD ROM. Will let you know how ping goes.

..........................So, tried PING, doesn't work, why, the partition I have on my SATA disk is has a simple(Dynamic) layout. I need a partition(Basic) layout. What I want is, to be able to back up (GHOST) my stuff without formatting then I can make any amendments necessary on the current system. I just cant seem to make the first step which is ghost it. I'm afraid I'll loose all my data if I don't back it up first and not have a contingent to fall onto. Can someone help me out here!!

We have a corporate license for Acronis True Image - it does the job really well and you can run it directly in windows XP (it reboots and runs the image process is the windows xp startup mode, so nothing is locked).

They have a relatively inexpensive home version (and a downloadable trial):

Not really the question you asked, but hope that is helpful.

Ping doesn't work? I have dynamic SATA too. Shit piss fuck goddamnit! I highly recommend you shoot an email to the developers about the specifics of your system so that there is the hope they will one day improve their software.

Next plan - SysAngel DVD Generator

...Shit... I need to find a free GHOST'ing application...

At work, I sometimes use a BartPE CD to do just that. It's completely customizable and I've added Ghost 8.0 as an app.

I'd suggest giving it a try...it's never let me down.

Xerxys 04-05-2008 07:04 PM

Thank you all, will try, especially, that SysAngel DVD app. Augi, about a ghosting app, the ghost I have, remember, the Symantec, is 688kb and in the old days, I installed many a XP with it. The reason it doesn't work with my drives must be because of my configuration.

It's complicated, BIOS/CMOS themselves have changed over the last two years and DOS simply doesn't even know what SATA is. My HDD's dont even have jump pins in them, I rigged my computer over a good butt numbing 5 hours such that all I do now is just stick HDD in them and they work. It might probably work if your ghosting from IDE HD to IDE HD, not so much with SATA, RAID and SCSI. (or sometimes NTFS file format, sucks eh???)

Hey, wait a minute, I think I have something..............

I hope Avira works.

Even though I doubt it will, trial and error, (exactly in that order) has made me a better teacher. Will get back to you.

Xerxys 04-13-2008 07:40 AM

So, As I promised, I shall and I will get back to you, and now I am. Here's the skinny, This made me feel so stupid I resigned to never show my innefficiencies ever!! Anyway, First of all, if all your partitions are in NTFS and they can't be read by regular DOS3.0, you gotta resize your master partition without loosing data with Partition Magic, "now that I know it works, I'll buy it." That's it, no format, no unnecessary re-installations, just resize!!!!

If you were in my case, a whole 80GB HDD unnecessary occupied by XP, just resize it down to the space you want, (provided of-course, you haven't used that much space and have some free) and you have unpartitioned space ready to be harnessed. I resized my XP down to 20GB, I dont even think I need that much for XP, I never store anything locally anyway!

After doing this, I now have Solaris on my computer which was kind of anticlimactic since I dont know how to use it. But I'm getting there, I'm getting there.........

Hain 04-13-2008 07:47 AM

Might I ask why you choose Solaris?

Xerxys 04-13-2008 08:26 AM

I'm just breaking into programming with C++ and Java. The time on our posts says 6:40PM, where are you guys exactly, it's 12:36PM where I'm at!!
