Vista interrupts my network

I have a laptop with Windows Vista loaded on it. My network router is a Linksys WRT54G.

When I connect Vista to the network - wireless or cable - it briefly disconnects all computers on the network. So, if my wife is playing WoW and I turn on my laptop, she gets booted.

I've tried loading Ubuntu on the laptop and it connects to the network without any interruption.

What the fuck is going on?

It's pretty simple, Vista is all kinds of fucked up. There are a ton of bizarre bugs that have been reported, including some of the networking parts. There was a story on slashdot a few months back that showed that network speed was reduced when media is loaded, even when it's paused.

This is going to become my stock answer for any Vista tech questions. Sums everything up.

This and other networking bugs may be addressed in SP 1. Regardless, unless there's something specific that you need from Vista, I'd suggest an alternate operating system (Ubuntu for anything non-gaming, XP for games). Not the ideal solution, but until MS gets their shit together regarding Vista, I don't know what else there is to say.

I don't have that problem, but my vista laptop seems to 'cycle' every 20 minutes or so when it is accessing the net through wireless. Every 20 minutes or so, the laptop will disconnect from the net, I'll get a popup balloon that says that no wireless networks are detectable, and then a couple of minutes later, it will reconnect and everything will be fine. Drives me nuts when I'm talking on MSN.

Well, I'm busy downloading SP1 now. I'll be installing Vista X86 Business later tonight and the SP in the morning.

Hopefully I won't get too much shit.

StellaLuna gets that on hers too. We're talking about reinstalling her laptop with XP.

I have an HP laptop, bought it in June. Moved to Mexico shortly there after. Sometime in late fall I get a message from HP that there's an software update available to download. I downloaded the update and my system started working in "safe mode" only. Called HP and they told me the update made my graphics card incompatible with Vista. The only solution was to ship HP the system and they'd change out my card. I tried to explain to them I was in Mexico and perhaps they could just ship me the card and either I could slap it in or go to an HP service center here. Nope, gotta send us the system. I pay the cost of getting it to them and they'll ship it anywhere in the US free of charge. So I had to pay nearly $75 to ship them the unit, when doing so I fill out some paperwork showing the laptop is leaving the country for repair. They shipped it to my US address (mail drop service) and they forward it on to me, another $75. The unit gets here to Mexico and customs wants $400 import tax. I explain it's not new and there should be a form with the laptop showing it was sent out of the country for repair. Two days of back and forth phone calls and finally a guy at customs says "we found the paperwork but it's not in the way bill envelope, rather inside the box itself. Therefore it doesn't count, you need to pay the IVA tax." Again several days of calls and help from an attorney friend of mine down here and we managed to negotiate a tax of $100. So after $250 and about three weeks I had my laptop back.

A person at HP told me if I were running anything other then Vista I wouldn't have had this problem. Thanks, now I feel better. I asked them if they could just send me a copy of XP? Sure if you want to buy one we'll sell it to you.

I get it back and plug in my GPS to upload some data, wanted to head out looking for so obscure Mayan ruin sites. I get a message stating "Vista is unable to recognized the driver you're attempting to install, please check with the OEM for an updated driver." I did, they don't have one. Same thing happened with my printer.

Not a fan of Vista.

I'm seeeeeeriously considering partitioning another drive and putting xp on that, seeeerrriously. I have vista, I don't have any crippling issues with it or anything, but good grief, this laptop only has 2 gigs of ram in it, which is great for XP, not so much for vista

Ok, I'm an idiot. Why is ram more important to XP then Vista?

The wording was a bit odd, but perhaps this makes it clearer? I think that's what he means..

Go to properties on your network connection, select TCP\IP, and disable IPv6

IPv6 has been loaded by default on network connections since Beta 2. But as the world has not yet moved to IPv6, it's use strains your network.

It also takes a million times longer to connect to a domain when IPv6 is enabled. I second the recommendation to disable it until it becomes more mainstream.

At work, the boss got me a Compaq, loaded with Vista but we wanted the XP. Two hours of trying, I couldn't even get to BIOS(which should be pre-school easy, right?). He decided to call in his standby geek-he couldn't get there either. I'm stuck with Vista. Now I know why the geeks I tried to get to remove Vista and downgrade the pc I'd bought to XP, wouldn't do it.
There's a bunch of "how to's" online, but none work.
If you get it totally partitioned, share!!!

I did a lot of investigating of being able to dual boot XP or Vista when I first bought this Toshiba vista laptop, but eventually I decided it wasn't really worth the effort. It sometimes has a few issues, but overall, I don't really mind Vista. So far I have yet to find anything that is really incompatible with it, and that includes my 5 year old Brother Fax/Printer.

SP1 for Vista will be available to all on Wednesday, apparently their main focus on this pack is fixing security issues, however maybe, hopefully, they'll have done some work on their network issues as well.
