Help with IPod, Itunes and a system crash!

I need some help please.

My computer crashed last week and I had to reinstall windows. After reinstalling i-tunes I went to connect my ipod to transfer all the songs and low and behold... IT WON't LET ME! Now I have 2k+ songs on my Ipod and I can't add them to my itunes library and I can't add any more songs untill I sync with the itunes library...

Is there an easy way to transfer these songs? Is there some way apple allows to do this that I just am not getting? I've looked in Itunes everywhere but this just baffles me?

Any help would be appreciated I realllly don't feel like importing all those CD's again. BLAH

thanks... I did a search but didn't want to try anything "illegal" I wanted to know if Apple has a legal way to do this... I don't like getting in and messing with settings and all that. With my kinda luck I would f-up my ipod.

I just can't believe Apple doesnt have an answer for this.

Shani's suggestion in the other thread won't fuck up your iPod. I know, because I personally used it to transfer music from my iPod to a new(er) computer I have that isn't the computer I sync my iPod to. Furthermore, there's nothing illegal about it--you're merely making hidden files accessible.

Neither can we. They don't allow transfers from iPods to iTunes in hopes that you won't "steal" music from an iPod if you don't own it or the music. (i.e. They don't trust their users to obey the law.)

I wouldn't worry about the music being transferred from your iPod with a third-party program (of which there are many) if you are, in fact, a licensed user. It's not illegal to use these programs. Winamp does this by default, for example. I'm sure Apple would have buried those guys if it were illegal.

Maybe it's because Apple is aware that they are very easy to sue and they require some sort of goodwill from the recording industry.

It's probably one of those things where it's easier to let the grey market fill the void and offload the risk (and strain on relationships when it comes to contract-negotiation time).

Anyway, these guys have solid advice. Google will definitely know the answer to this one.

I don't know if it would be able to go around your problem, but I always recommend MediaMonkey [for Windows] if one likes iTunes.
Before making a switch read these articles:
  • Tracks from the iTunes store don't play on my iPod
Quoted from "Tracks from the iTunes store don't play on my iPod"   click to show
  • Playing M4A, M4P, M4B (AAC) Tracks

Personally I recommend FooBar2000 [for Windows]but that is a bit too much for some... boohoo.

Will Rockbox be able to play songs I've bought from on-line music stores?

The only thing I can add is that 64bit windows XP and the later versions of itunes are like mortal enemies! Just to be able to sync songs to my shuffle I had to modify the damn install file with orca and tell it that 64bit was okay to install to. Now, if I had 64bit vista, it would work just fine, but not windows xp... what a load of crap. Itunes is a pos anyways.

Try PodUtil, it'll transfer all of the songs from your iPod to your computer. It's free and it's pretty easy to use.

Actually, that reminds me of something: there's no problem with iTunes and 64-bit version -- just download the correct one from the apple site. But check your browser first. Apparently some (most?) versions of firefox are unable to handle the 64 bitness and automatically truncate down to 32 bits without telling you. Because of this, the installation of iTunes will give all kinds of strange behavior. Download again and install using a browser that can handle 64 bits and you'll be good to go.

I can't imagine how frustrated someone had to be to figure that one out.

floola.com

I just discovered this freeware app the other day.

It doesn't need to install and can copy to and from your PC and multiple PCs.

works in Linux, Mac, and PC.

Quote:
Floola supports all common used iPod features including artwork, podcasts and smart playlists! It's also able to convert audio or video incompatible with the iPod so that you can copy almost any file to it. It even allows adding youtube and myspace videos just entering the page url!

Take a look at the feature list to find out what it can do and feel free to suggest anything that might be missing.
