I have this same issue. I have a number of VHS tapes that need to be converted into a DVD. I also have a number of DVD that need to be converted to a digital format. I employ the two devices below.

The DVD burner is wonderful been using it for over 2 years now. It even works with my Tivo. The next device the Neuros OSD I just got this past week. It seems to work well, but the true test remains to be seen.

I do highly recommend the DVD burner.

Sure. Get yourself a TV tuner card. They're cheap, and they come with software to watch and record from the tuner. It'll have a coax-in. Run your VCR straight into that, set your software to record, burn the resulting video files to DVD, and Robert is your parent's sibling.

(Or you can skip the DVDs and figure a way to play digital video on your TV. That's the way the world is headed--you can be one leap frog ahead this time!)

What quality do you want? Do you want to use an existing VHS player or would you be open to buying a new one?

If you still have the 8mm you could skip the VHS altogether and go directly to digital ... it will look a lot better; especially if you have a good digital camera. If you don't, you could probably rent one (go for a 3cc like the Canon XL2, it also does native 24p which is what you really want for film transfer. You could even go HD; but it would be more expensive).

You'll need a telecine projector to playback and capture the film.

Here's a link to ebay: http://search.ebay.com/search/search...ine&category0=

You could probably rent one of those too along with the camera. You do photography (nudge nudge wink wink) so you probably already know of a good store in your area to find out.

And the wikipedia article on telecine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecine

It's not all that expensive ...

The last time I converted from VHS to DVD, I used a cheap 'Snappy' unit (like $50) that basically just plugs into your USB port, and has both coax and RCA for input. Through the snappy software, just click 'Begin' and hit play on the VHS, and it starts recording. The quality was better than I thought it would be, but you can still tell it came from a VHS tape.

You can find cheap video input boxes at any computer store.

I forgot to state that I opted to not use something attached to my computer directly because I wanted to be able to do the conversions without losing my ability to do other things while it was encoding or burning. It had to be easy enough for my wife to use as well and not just limited to the "one computer."

The units above are can be used in stand alone modes or attached to the computer.
