Reverse sync as in take the music off of the Nano and onto the computer?
You'll need to download a special program to do that, unless the music is loaded onto the Nano as if it were an external harddrive. iPodRip is the best program I've heard of to do that, though I haven't used it myself.

I do this all the time (but I use PC not mac and its not a nano but a classic). I use mine on 4 dif computers so mine is set to manually mange the music, not automatically sync
I open the ipod in explorer (making sure all files are showing) I "unhid" the music folder and copy all the files in there to my itunes library..here are the instructions I found and they work great (I dont know how you'd have to modify if you're using a MAC) A reader points out a straightforward way for Windows users to transfer music from an iPod to your hard drive, without extra software: 1. Connect the iPod to your PC. If iTunes starts syncing (ie erasing) your music automatically, hit the X in the upper right hand corner of iTunes display, to the left of the search box, to stop it. 2. In Control Panel, Portable Media Devices, double-click your iPod. 3. In the Tools menu -> Options, in the View Tab, check "Show hidden files and folders." 4. Navigate to the Music folder. On my 2nd gen 'pod, the full path is Portable Media Devices\GINA'S IPOD (F\iPod_Control\Music 5. Select all the music folders, and drag and drop them into a folder on your hard drive, or directly into iTunes.

Downloading from an ipod is a rather obvious feature which is left out of itunes to discourage piracy. It is possible to browse an ipod like a disk, but the filenames are all stuff like ks3s.mp3. You need a 3rd part program for this. I've used ipodutil. It is available for both windows and mac.

***Edit since I dont know if this discussion is for a PC or MAC, Im going to stop commenting as I only know that exploring and dragging and dropping works (and gives the proper file names once dragged) on PC

The OP has a Mac, his girlfriend has the PC... so any suggestions should be fine since he can just use the girlfriend's PC to take the music off...
If you need a good rename utility for the files once they come of the iPod, FB2K has a great ability to do that.

get iDump (it's not free, but worth it), it'll pull the contents from your iPod so you can move it from one pc to another.

Many thanks!
I used the iPodrip program w/ success after a little manipulation. The program initially couldn't read any files on my iPod when trying to save straight to iTunes. The program worked beautifully when I saved to a file on my desktop. The transfer to iTunes from the desktop was even able to read song, title, album and equalizer settings.
Thanks for the first victory in recovering part of my lost harddrive. |

there's another program for Mac called Senuti (iTunes, backwards) that accomplishes this.
Here's their website

Oh and all you folks with compatible Ip-Ods, I recommend you Rockbox'em so you don't have to worry about this ever again. That is if there is the right firmware.
