What are thoughts, XP or 98?

Which do you feel is better? Which seems more stable?

HeyAgain 06-21-2003 11:25 PM

Better: XP
Stable: XP

The System Restore feature is the best feature with XP. If you have made a mistake, you can simply click System Restore, and your mistake will disappear.

samremy 06-21-2003 11:46 PM

Thanks for the info...very helpful!

madsenj37 06-22-2003 01:01 AM

Ive heard XP is much more stable. Unless your a gamer and need some kind of compatability always go with XP.

opentocomments 06-22-2003 06:27 AM

I think 98 is wonderful for me and as for system restoring i have roxio goback and that works like a champ. And 98 is way smaller where as XP is HUGE. Just was looking and saw that no one was Pro 98 and it is a very good operating system.

Wyodiver33 06-22-2003 09:09 AM

I would go with XP. I think 98 is a big pile of walrus dung. And, in my experience, XP only has problems with older games. XP isn't perfect, but it's Much better than 98.

The_Dude 06-22-2003 09:45 AM

go w/ xp, but make sure all your hardware is compliant.

my csanner doesnt work cuz the shitty manufactuer is too lazy to make a driver for xp. bastards

Damnfinn 06-22-2003 12:32 PM

I just went to XP pro and it is far more stable and I run games on it just fine.

Cocktopus 06-22-2003 12:59 PM

when i ran 98 back when, i re-install every 6 mos. or so cause the system would start to bog down

SiN 06-22-2003 01:12 PM

XP Pro.

dolemite175 06-22-2003 04:22 PM

XP Pro all the way

Brewmaniac 06-22-2003 05:08 PM

I'm using XP home and I don't have to reboot 5 times a day and it almost never freezes up.

jimrockford 06-23-2003 01:31 AM

XP is better. Period.

Same here. That's the usual routine for power users and win98.

XP pro here since I have a dual processor machine. Much, much better!

Fallon 06-23-2003 05:46 AM

Back when I didn't completely screw up my computer, I was using Windows 98, I loved it. Even though it's not as robust as XP, it isn't a resource hog, which is nice because it doesn't cost as much, espically for the poor people like me that live in a cardboard box, and have a phone cord plugged into the neighbors outlet(not really but pretty damn close)

Realizm 06-23-2003 07:14 AM

I'm all for XP Pro. I kind of didn't like it to begin with because of the change in interface around the start menu, so I changed back to classic. I find it much easier to use than Win 98, and being able to control everything from the Management center was nice for me..

Charlatan 06-23-2003 07:18 AM

XP Pro or 2000 Pro either is good.

XP pro for games though...

TwoToTango 06-23-2003 08:53 AM

Windows 2000 Pro. Same reliable core as
XP, sans all the gumdrops and fruitcake.

Kii_666 06-23-2003 09:29 AM

I'm partial to 2000 Pro, XP seems too bogged down.

VeXteR 06-23-2003 10:34 AM

XP!!!!!! Make sure youve got 512M ram or so and a 1 ghz CPU. I know it will run on less. But any less might run better with 2kpro

rubicon 06-23-2003 11:12 AM

Windows 98? Are you nuts?! :)

sweeze 06-23-2003 11:28 AM

XP's better. but interestingly enough I have some old games that work better under wine on linux than they do under XP :-P

silentbob 06-23-2003 02:32 PM

NT :)

cpugamerbb 06-23-2003 09:16 PM

Stability is great on XP, No problems with games except for command and conquer...but that's ancient... Install w/ NTFS also it'll perform better.

friend_pokey 06-23-2003 09:43 PM

if your cpu is over 1 ghz or so go with XP.

however if it is less than that, 2000 pro is a better choice.

win 98 is a heap of crap.

dunkelhelmut 06-23-2003 10:22 PM

Win2K is the better option, by far

XP is too flashy and uses way too much of your CPU. 98 is way too unstable to be usable. That leaves you with 2K

charliex 06-23-2003 11:46 PM

i used to be all about the 2000 never thought i'd upgrade to XP, got a new laptop, turned off some of the crayola stuff and its got some really nice features that 2K doesn't

Jeff 06-23-2003 11:54 PM

Why's XP Pro so much better than XP Home?

labob 06-24-2003 12:50 AM

my vote, XP Pro

Haven't had nearly the issues I had with running 98se

opentocomments 06-24-2003 04:08 AM

if i wasnt so ignorant to the linux world then i would switch over to red hat but i know nothing about it so meh.

how can u guys have so much trouble with 98 it is just cake to keep running i run a check every once in a while and i am fine a few errors and updates and voila

stnnotop 06-24-2003 08:25 AM

when i ran 98, it would crash AT LEAST 2 times a day, and garunteed to crash anytime i had more than 7-8 IE windows open. XP never crashes, it is as stable as a rock

Jerry Manderine 06-25-2003 01:13 AM

Win2000 Pro... all the stability, none of the fisher price kiddy stuff that you have to turn off in XP, and none of the license activation crap.
If you are feeling adventurous - Server 2003 is a rock!

theguyondacouch 06-25-2003 11:26 AM

Go with xp, 98 sux

gibingus 06-25-2003 11:30 AM

win2000 pro all the way.

gerg01 06-25-2003 10:17 PM

XP is more stable and is easier to use.

gamer715 06-26-2003 08:31 AM

I'm running XP, but I (legitimately for once  ) got a copy of Windows 2003 Server that I installed on another comp, and I must say I'm thinking of switching to it for my desktop OS. It comes totally locked-down, so you don't have to worry about anything being on that shouldn't be.

If your a basic to semi advanced PC user then the differences are not very visable.

The big differences are

You can remote control your PC from another PC in Pro.
Dual CPU Support
File Encryption for your Files
Multiple Language support
Better networking, for connecting to multiple networks
IIS (internet server)

Tanerax 06-26-2003 10:29 AM

I personally perfer win2k Pro.. Stable, reliable, Great Os

But as far as 98 and xp.. Xp has much better memory managment then 98 and its much more reliable and stable then 98 as well...

Jack Ruby 06-26-2003 10:43 AM

XP. Of course.

I have this friend who, despite never having used XP, keeps claiming Win98 is "more stable". Yeah, fuckmunch, then how come you see five or six blue screens a day and the times I had o reboot my PC since I switched to XP can be counted on one hand ?

steveincolumbus 06-26-2003 11:24 AM

2k Pro

BuDDaH 06-26-2003 09:49 PM

I run XP Corporate..
No problems here..

XP blows 98 or ME out of the box...

cliche 07-06-2003 02:33 AM

2k pro - but definitely XP over 98 if you want to use your computer for more than about 15 minutes between reboots!

merkdr 07-06-2003 04:32 AM

perhaps its just reluctance to install more ms STUFF , i`ve been running 98 for quite some time , i have xp pro , tryed to set up as a dual boot , no go . maybe some day i`ll find the need for xp , but for now i`ll run 98

Pedialyte 07-06-2003 07:40 PM

XP Rules. Simple.

Stan 07-10-2003 05:10 PM

If it's just between XP and 98, go XP, unless you play DOS games a lot or games like Need for Speed High Stakes. As mentioned above, if going XP, be 110% sure ALL your hardware is fully compatible with XP. If you could get a hold of Windows 2000, add Service Pack 4 and IMHO that would be better than XP.

punx1325 07-10-2003 10:22 PM

They are both excellent OS's, but XP is way faster and makes my life easier!!!

sub zero 07-11-2003 01:04 AM

XP Pro

No contest

bermuDa 07-11-2003 01:28 AM

xp has just about every advantage over 98 you could think of, including the ability to run programs in "compatibility mode" to emulate just about every other windows version.

cheese 07-11-2003 01:29 AM

hehe i just re-installed my 98 system. its a junker. amd 750 , THAT i wont run XP on. XP is nice and stable but its a hog and takes a beast to run ... so i dont. ohh opentocomments, if you install/uninstall, download/delete, tweek the living fuck out of you 98 RIg it get bogged down and the regestry gets to bulky blah blah blha Bu i whent 3 years with out a reinstall of 98 :) [i rule

merkdr 07-11-2003 04:07 AM

98`s a bitch if your running alot of apps , locks up all the time on me but until i get pro installed, it works

smithrussell 07-14-2003 01:53 PM

win xp or win 2k are far more stable that 98. xp is really nice b/c all (almost all) drivers are loaded automatically for most hardware. just reinstalled 2k on my computer b/c gave my only copy of xp with the computer i just sold to a friend.

the big one for me: XP home edition cannot join a domain, and the admin account is a bitch to get to

When you have a small server running win2k server with DHCP and DNS (slight overkill for 2-3 systems, but why not), home ed. is not an option.

but my vote would be win2k professional - unless you are a avid gamer, then you might want to consider dualbooting with win98 for those games that work better there

Dilbert1234567 07-16-2003 09:25 PM

2k for me, as a general rule

NT>9x

BUDD206 07-17-2003 02:19 AM

XP for me !

sixate 07-17-2003 08:57 AM

I just thought this would be funny to put here. Click below for some hidden settings in 98.

You know, I think I had every one of those checked when I was running 98. ...

The Bolshevist 07-19-2003 10:00 PM

XP. I had 95 (shudder...) and 98, then tossed the machines (they were dying) and got a brand new one with XP home. Solid. A bit candy cane like, but if you like it, great. Can't comment on XP pro, as I am not a power user.

jpnpk 07-19-2003 11:39 PM

Xp Pro if your machine can handle it, otherwise 2K Pro.

Fallen 07-20-2003 07:29 AM

Acutally, I've found XP pro to be faster on low end machines than 2Kpro. It could just be my experience though, because they are pretty close to the same base.

Wyodiver33 07-20-2003 04:11 PM

I have 98 SE on one computer, and it's ok, but I'm going to put 2k on it soon. My main computer runs XP pro. 98 sucks.

crashoverride 07-20-2003 05:27 PM

windows xp = better looking, stable, more secure

Mr Scorcex 07-20-2003 07:31 PM

Linux. Oh, sorry. Really, I run a dual boot, Linux and Win 98 SE, just because I never had problems with win98 before with gaming.

mrklixx 07-21-2003 05:48 AM

Does XP even have the BSOD? If so, I've never seen it. :)

The Rogue 07-22-2003 03:32 PM

XP all the way, over any other OS.

Bahamut137 07-22-2003 04:01 PM

XP Pro, and do a clean install and not just an upgrade.

JJamesB2 07-22-2003 08:02 PM

2K pro is my fav, XP kills resources on a bunch of shit you don't need like visual effects and other background processes, but XP does have a wider hardware compatibilty range. I'd recommend 98 if you have a significantly limited amound of hard drive space. And if you do, buy a new hard drive please.

limproach 07-22-2003 11:00 PM

XP any day

end of story

aarchaon 11-18-2003 04:35 PM

i am running windows xp pro on a 450mHz PIII without any probs whatsoever. i have turned off a lot of the services and used bootvis to reduce my boot time by 3/4. one problem i had at the beginning was my old graphics card wasn't properly compatible with the default drivers that come with XP, so i couldnt play any 3d games. New Geforce4 MX 440 SE works perfectly fine.

Lasereth 11-18-2003 05:24 PM

Yeah, I've installed Windows XP on a 133 MHz. Yes, 133 MHz. It has exactly 64 MB of RAM. It doesn't run perfect, but it gets the job done.

I also have XP on a 400 MHz K6-2 and it runs VERY, VERY well. Much faster and stabler than Windows 98. I used to use that 400 MHz as my PC, and it actually ran XP faster than my current 1.6 GHz Athlon XP.

Windows XP is amazing. People say it's bloatware and oh so huge, but it's not if you turn off the graphical options. I hate them anyway, so I turn them off on my Athlon XP as well. I can also say that I've successfully got about 6 BSODs with XP. :) Oh well, they're only about 1 every 2 months.

-Lasereth

sailor 11-18-2003 07:03 PM

XP. No contest. The only other MS OS that competes is 2K. XP is essentially a prettied up version of 2K.

Lasereth, would you care to elaborate on how to do this?

merkerguitars 11-18-2003 08:46 PM

98 if you want to run old dos stuff :)

Which part? I guess you're talking about turning off the graphical options. Go into visual effects through control panel in XP. Find the tab that has a ton of check boxes which are all visual effects. I uncheck ALL of them except "Drop shadows on desktop icons" and "show windows contents while dragging." This makes your system look like older versions of Windows and increases casual performance.

-Lasereth

termit3 11-18-2003 09:36 PM

I've had the same install of XP Pro on my PC for over 18 months and it has never frozen up.

charliex 11-18-2003 09:44 PM

XP, i was all about 2000 never thought i'd upgrade to XP for the same reasons most people listed, got it with a new laptop, and haven't looked back,.

its more stable than 2000, some nicer productivity features and you can turn off the nice stuff gui stuff if you want to, but you also have the option of customizing it.

so far i haven't really found the need to have xp pro over home, on all systems except the p4 hyper threaded, which came with xp pro anyway.

it boots faster, shutsdown faster and killing rogue programs is a lot easier.

98 would be better on a really low end system that you played a lot of older dos games on, though they often have issues there too.
