2k pro - but definitely XP over 98 if you want to use your computer for more than about 15 minutes between reboots!

If it's just between XP and 98, go XP, unless you play DOS games a lot or games like Need for Speed High Stakes. As mentioned above, if going XP, be 110% sure ALL your hardware is fully compatible with XP. If you could get a hold of Windows 2000, add Service Pack 4 and IMHO that would be better than XP.

xp has just about every advantage over 98 you could think of, including the ability to run programs in "compatibility mode" to emulate just about every other windows version.

When you have a small server running win2k server with DHCP and DNS (slight overkill for 2-3 systems, but why not), home ed. is not an option. but my vote would be win2k professional - unless you are a avid gamer, then you might want to consider dualbooting with win98 for those games that work better there |

XP. I had 95 (shudder...) and 98, then tossed the machines (they were dying) and got a brand new one with XP home. Solid. A bit candy cane like, but if you like it, great. Can't comment on XP pro, as I am not a power user.

Does XP even have the BSOD? If so, I've never seen it.

2K pro is my fav, XP kills resources on a bunch of shit you don't need like visual effects and other background processes, but XP does have a wider hardware compatibilty range. I'd recommend 98 if you have a significantly limited amound of hard drive space. And if you do, buy a new hard drive please.

i am running windows xp pro on a 450mHz PIII without any probs whatsoever. i have turned off a lot of the services and used bootvis to reduce my boot time by 3/4. one problem i had at the beginning was my old graphics card wasn't properly compatible with the default drivers that come with XP, so i couldnt play any 3d games. New Geforce4 MX 440 SE works perfectly fine.

Yeah, I've installed Windows XP on a 133 MHz. Yes, 133 MHz. It has exactly 64 MB of RAM. It doesn't run perfect, but it gets the job done.
I also have XP on a 400 MHz K6-2 and it runs VERY, VERY well. Much faster and stabler than Windows 98. I used to use that 400 MHz as my PC, and it actually ran XP faster than my current 1.6 GHz Athlon XP. Windows XP is amazing. People say it's bloatware and oh so huge, but it's not if you turn off the graphical options. I hate them anyway, so I turn them off on my Athlon XP as well. I can also say that I've successfully got about 6 BSODs with XP. Oh well, they're only about 1 every 2 months. -Lasereth

XP. No contest. The only other MS OS that competes is 2K. XP is essentially a prettied up version of 2K.

Which part? I guess you're talking about turning off the graphical options. Go into visual effects through control panel in XP. Find the tab that has a ton of check boxes which are all visual effects. I uncheck ALL of them except "Drop shadows on desktop icons" and "show windows contents while dragging." This makes your system look like older versions of Windows and increases casual performance. -Lasereth

XP, i was all about 2000 never thought i'd upgrade to XP for the same reasons most people listed, got it with a new laptop, and haven't looked back,.
its more stable than 2000, some nicer productivity features and you can turn off the nice stuff gui stuff if you want to, but you also have the option of customizing it. so far i haven't really found the need to have xp pro over home, on all systems except the p4 hyper threaded, which came with xp pro anyway. it boots faster, shutsdown faster and killing rogue programs is a lot easier. 98 would be better on a really low end system that you played a lot of older dos games on, though they often have issues there too. |
