LAN Video Streaming

Hi All

I'd like to set up a PC on the LAN at work to stream out video. Basically, we have a satellite TV feed that I'd like to share with a select few people and the simplest way I can think of doing it would be via their web browser.

We had something similar at varsity where they'd provide you with a link where you could pick up whatever channel the DSTV decoder was on at that time - usually sport.

I'd like to do this with as much free/open source software as possible. I have the following hardware at my disposal:

- HP XW4400 PC
- Win XP SP2
- 1.5 GB RAM
- Entry-level processor for this box (I have no idea what it is)
- USB TV Capture card
- As many network/video cards as I need to pull this off

So, from a software perspective, how would I set this up? I know VLC has the capacity to do this kind of thing, but I haven't looked at it properly yet.

Any and all help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Henri

I use Sage TV to do what you are looking for. It's not free though.

My suggestion would be to look into MythTV. You should be able to do most of what you are looking to accomplish between it and VLC.

Thanks, Daemon.

After much tinkering and testing, I am now able to stream a file from my PC as a multicast (UDP) and pick it up on other PC's using VLC as the player.

However, I still can't get the http streaming to work. I followed the docs from VLC to the letter, but still no luck. Maybe it's a feature that's blocked on our network? (I highly doubt that, though.)

Anyone have experience with this sort of thing?
