Best way to make MP3's?

Whats the best way/program to make your own mp3's?
I'm talking about hooking up my cd player to my soundcard and recording my own...
{for sharing with others of course....}

Well the first thing would be to use a CD-ROM drive as opposed to hooking up a CD player. It's easier that way, and I'd bet your computer has a CD-ROM already.

The first thing you need to do is create WAV files from the CD. I suggest a program called EAC (Exact Audio Copy), as it is great at error correction. CD-ex is also pretty good too if EAC doesn't recognize your CD-ROM drive.

Okay, next you need to encode the WAV files into MP3. The Lame encoder is pretty much the modern standard. You can get this cool little application called "WinLAME" that is a front-end for the encoder that makes it pain-free. You just load up your WAV's, select a preset encoder, and it takes care of the rest.

This is what I recommend for beginners. When you get familiar with that, you'll want to toy around with manually using the Lame encoder for better quality and more options.

I can make MP3's from m cd-rom drive already... I should have been more clear...
I meant making my own midi files to mp3 or a cassette tape to mp3.... Hooking up my stereo to soundcard... making mp3's thru my soundcard.................

I use Sound Forge. I record a lot of DJ sets and un everything out my mixer into my soundcard. I record everything with sound forge and save it as a .wav file. I use a free program called "WAV to MP3 Recorder" I downloaded from www.download.com . It comes with a few programs(its "ad supported"), but you can uninstall the other programs and it works great.

Hi,

I wonder if you have any ideas on a problem I'm having. I'm familiar with .wav and mp3 files, and I have Sound Forge, albeit a craptacular version that came with a CD writer a few years ago.

I presently need to edit (truncate with a fadeout, basically) a MIDI file. I'm clueless about working with MIDIs.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks.

i would recement that you copy the sound as a WAV (uncompressed) first then compress it to MP3

Use eac to rip and lame to encode. You can set eac to convert with lame in one process also. Check out ubernet.org for more info on creating excellant quality mp3's.

Wow. A whole new world. I'd just used Media Jukebox when I needed to.

Thanks for the tip.

Yep. Doesn't get much simpler than that. I also like the way iTunes is smoothly integrated with Gracenote to grab track info.
