I want a Plaid crayon

desktop wallpapers
Ok i spend way too much time in front of my computer so i tend to change my desktop wallpaper fairly often but my problem is a lot of the photos i use for wallpapers are not the right aspect ratio and they are too large to fit perfect. Anyone know of a way i can shrink down photos real easy to use as a wallpaper without cropping off the edges? Im sure i could use some sort of photo editor if i really had to but it would be nice to not have to deal with that. Cant believe windows has a option to strech a picture to fit but not one to shrink it to fit. I guess what im looking for is something to fill in that shrink to fit option windows seems to lack. Would have to keep the aspect ratio as well as shrink it btw.

stretch to fit should shrink it down to the right size.
you really would be better off downloading a copy of the gimp(free opensource photo editor) and shrinking it down and sharpening, and adding the right colored bars to keep it looking nice.

if you have Irfan view, it can do it in 2 steps.
open your picture in the program and then: click image > click resize resample... > then select the size of your screen. so 1024 x768 etc.. this will shrink the picture to the most likely size. then click option > click Set as wallpaper... > centered. that should work. edit: the good thing about doing this is you don't have to deal with saving your picture once you resize it, I view makes a separate jpg in the windows directory so when you want to change background, it will override itself. and if you want to get it EXACTLY, theres a best fit to desktop button too. (i just noticed it. ) this is in the resize resample ... window.

strech to fit changes the aspect ratio so if its a picture of a person they look all funky. i had a good picture of a cow that i wanted to use but strech to fit made it look really fat.
Whats irfan view? ah irfanview seems to do exactly what i want just not as lazy as it could be. Neat little program though. thanks for the help =) Last edited by Plaid13; 06-03-2007 at 12:12 PM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |
