Network Lag

A friend is experiencing some network lag when using Ventrillo I don't think that the problem is really Vent related because the PATHPING gives me back this info.

ran a PATHPING instead of a TRACERT on 2 separate days now between my computer and the ecgnetwork IP address, and low and behold:

Okay, I pinged these directly and get no response from them.

Code:
 6 19ms 0/ 100 = 0% 0/ 100 = 0% 151.164.251.182
pings back straight away.

Code:
 2 9ms 0/ 100 = 0% 0/ 100 = 0% 63.194.18.254
Does #2 need to update their routing table or something? What can I do about this? How can I manually remove those 3 IPs from the pathing?

If the problem doesn't get fixed in a days time I would contact sbc (att?) about their network. As far as removing the 3 ip's from the route, it's easier and better to have your isp (sbc/att I assume) fix their network.

Don't worry about the 100% drop rate, those are probably set to drop icmp (ping) packets. It's the 3/4% packet loss which is probably causing delays, because your vent client is having to resubmit data.

I would focus on isolating your network (perhaps plug directly into your cable/dsl instead of through the router), and once done with that call your isp and report packet loss.

9 hops really isn't unusual, and an 80-87ms ping is very good. Again, it's the packet loss, the only other thing it could be is the server and then others would be reporting the same thing.

Good luck!

Agreed with the previous post, don't worry about dropped ICMP packets. There's a lot of internet routers that are set to drop them entirely (or at least not respond to direct pings).

Exactly what sort of network lag is he experiencing while he uses Ventrilo and is the lag just affecting Ventrilo or all of his internet applications while he's using it? If it's all applications but only when he's on Ventrilo, my suspicion would be that he's just filling up his network connection and ACKs are getting delayed / dropped.

only Vent is lagging. All other applications are fine, no other lag.

i'll find out more specifics of his experience.

is it possible that vent is being shaped by those routers?

Does vent lag connected to other servers? Has he tried others? A public voip server is usually an overloaded voip server. 3KB/s per user will quickly saturate a rented pipe.
