What's Your Machine Worth To You???
i had a dream the other night someone stole my external drives with all my music on them... some 20,000 albums +/-...
i knew i could buy new drives but it occurd to me the time i spent infringing on coprighted material is well over 5 years... then i thought of all the many programs i have on this thing, Xara 3d, Xara 3d xtreme, Cool Edit Pro, MMJB 10 Plus, Acoustica Label Maker, DVDX Fab Platinum, DVDX Copy Platinum, Adobe Audition to name a few and more all with cracks and/or key generators... (not one of which i ever paid for either) at $12 - $15 a pop my albums alone would be worth 1/4 of a million (anyone wanna buy them?) so, really, what is your computah worth to you should you ever lose yer stuff??? |

as far as music and software goes, i have many backups so it's not worth too much. but my personal work and w/e i don't have backed up is worth a ton to me!
for the computer, it's like 1500$ and for the things on it, like another 5000$ or so. but like you said, if i took all my mp3s and software even backedup, it would be pretty high. 10,000 to 100,000$. (individual songs on itunes are like 99cents each right? well i got over 5000 songs. + the albums that are backed up, .. )

Well, my computer cost close to $1300 when I built it (P4 3.0gHz, 1GB DDR2, etc). This was over 2 years ago. Recently I got a $400 monitor. I also added a $100 250gb external hard drive last year. I've had to replace the video card and the motherboard after some unfortunate mishaps.
Music M:\ is 6.83 GB, looks like 1,100 songs. So.. whatever that is. Then I have a V: drive filled with 100GB of movies, and then there's some spill-over on N: Then there's the warez... |

Hum well the hardware is worth about... $1500 or so.
The Music is worth... next to nothing. dont keep much on my computer. Or any movies on it. But.. my collection of goats gone wild stuff is just priceless. Realisticly everything on my hard drives is pretty easy to replace. I burn copies of anything that i really want to keep. But the most annoying thing would be my stored paswords and accounts for diffrent things. Someone logging into my messanger and talking to people i know and stuff would be the most annoying. But i kinda doubt anyone would be interested in that. I dont keep any credit card info or personal info stored on the computer so that wouldnt be too bad. I would gladly take $2500 in trade for it as is. Would give me a chance to update the system and find new and more exciting episodes of goats gone wild to download. |

5k at least.
but the fines and fees I would be charged if someone were to take a good luck at everything on my PC is probably worth about 20-50 thousand dollars. So I think I'll keep it for now.

my hard drive just bricked a few days ago. i have a backup from a few months back but everything since then is gone. i've been a pack rat with my computer, i've been "collecting" for over a decade. those fragments of memories would be worth upwards of a thousand dollars to me.
in terms of the computer itself, it's a 2500$ machine hooked up to a 4000$ home theatre system with 5000$ worth of software and at least that much in media. i'd be a little miffed if i lost all that

The actual machine isn't worth much anymore, but the contents of my hard drive would take a while to replace.
I've got about 28GB of music, 133GB of anime, 60GB of movies, 3GB of pictures. Random files that I've saved over the years are somewhere in 70GBs. Not to mention many programs that I would be too lazy to redownload, etc.

cold hard cash for all my computers, it's about $8000 (including depreciation) but as for the files. the client data is priceless, at a minimum, if i loose it, I'd stand to loose tens of thousands of dollars of business. then the 5.6TB of 'stuff' would take a long, long time to re-rip and re-encode.

Hardware: Whatever. It's a never ending cycle of upgrades anyway. It'd be disruptive, and I'd hate to replace all the shop equip & misc stuff, but life would go on.
Software & data: Don't go there. No, no, no. It's what I do so I'd be sunk. Customer disasters have made me paranoid to the point my home and office arrays continually sync. Anything I'm on the hook for is in two+ locations depending on importance and change frequency. Failing that, time to forward calls to my insurance co and take an unplanned vacation. /me high-tails it to destinations unknown

My hardware is probably worth $1000. Software isn't much, if I'm running Windows them I'm only out the cost of my Windows license. If I'm running Linux I'm not even out that much. I have about 1100 songs, so $1100 for that. I actually just deleted my entire porn collection, 4 years and 150 GB worth, so I don't even have to worry about losing that.

I would be replacing:
Pentium 4/HT 3GHz Windows XP Home Dell 16 inch Trinitron CRT monitor 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM 80GB ATA Hard Drive 6x DVD 16x CD/RW combo drive 256MB ATI Radeon X1650 Pro 3D video card ...with no digital-only media files with this (its closest Dell equivalent): Pentium D Processor 935 with Dual Core Technology (3.2GHz) Windows Vista Home Premium Dell 19 inch SE198WFP Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM 320GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM) 16x DVD+/-RW Drive 256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache ...for a total cost of $859 plus taxes... so.... My computer is worth under $1,000 to me.... but its replacement would be far better than what I have now. ![]()
