Places to clear after looking at porn

thought this would help everyone out.

first, you clear history
then you clear temp internet files
clear the address bar if necessary
delete cookies

if using win media player, clear the media library
clear the file menu (using the registry)

anything i'm overlooking?

johnnytremain 06-14-2003 12:51 PM

if you're looking at files on your harddrive then
Start Menu, Documents

Sorry I don't remember how to clear it or get rid of the Documents list altogether. I think powertoys or something has the option to edit your start menu.

Peetster 06-14-2003 01:32 PM

Right click the task bar, choose properties, advanced tab, clear.

gamer715 06-14-2003 02:45 PM

This has slipped my mind: how do you clear the IE address bar??

The_Dude 06-14-2003 02:57 PM

it's in the registry.

start->run->regedit

navigate to this key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs

delete from there

Or just turn that crap off...... Tools/internet options/content/autocompleat..... uncheck "web addresses" OK

Jesus Pimp 06-14-2003 05:25 PM

Don't forget to delete spyware from porn sites with AdAware..

tfbrown69 06-14-2003 07:04 PM

or ,spybot it...

gamer715 06-14-2003 08:40 PM

Thanks Dude, i used to know it but forgot.

dim5 06-14-2003 09:34 PM

Or, you could use Mozilla. There's a toolbar for Mozilla which lets you put "clear cache / clear location bar / clear history" on a handy button-bar.

crashoverride 06-15-2003 07:17 AM

and look into your Favorites
some sites bookmark themself silently

Boner 06-15-2003 11:50 AM

bah, just get MRU-Blaster and automate all of that.

Is this the only way to do this? It seems like a tedious process just to clear a list every time. My girl has been visiting a site and she's worried her parents can find a backdoor to anything she's typed in. Are you sure this is a complete list?

Thanks guys
-T

By the way: I just typed in an address, did this Regedit, and found the address I typed in. I then "Cleared History" which is much faster than doing this, and the 'file' in Regedit dissapeared so this isn't necessary if you use clear history (unless there's something I'm missing)

soopafreek 06-22-2004 08:53 PM

spybot has a "usage tracks" function that should do most, if not all of this... however it's unchecked by default.

jvwgtr 06-23-2004 06:49 AM

You also need to kill the index.dat file, right?

-Ever- 06-23-2004 07:46 AM

And how do I do that?

Fearless_Hyena 06-23-2004 10:32 AM

Or surf using Firefox. No popups, less chance of being hijacked, and you can clear ALL that junk with 2 clicks ;)

I know Dude's original post is from last year but all the info in this thread is still good to know..

kutulu 06-23-2004 02:15 PM

lol, my wife always makes fun of me when I forget to cover my tracks. At least I'm lucky enough to have someone who thinks it's funny.

tropple 06-23-2004 02:18 PM

Setting the cache size to zero is nice, too.

Holo 06-23-2004 07:26 PM

I also have a way of hiding stored porn:

if You have at least two computers in a network, map network drives and password protect them. Download all the porn you want to you network drives and disconnect those drives, making them invisible to n00b relatives in explorer. This only works if the other PC has no monitor and they don't know how to use VNC, but they shouldn't need access to your porn pot PC right? ;)

powerclown 06-23-2004 09:40 PM

They WILL find it.

Spanky Johnson 06-26-2004 12:18 PM

The guy doing a software demo at our company the other day could have used this advice. He started to type in a url and IE tried to autocomplete several porn sites for him. I don't think many people in the room were paying enough attention to notice, although you could tell the guy doing the demo knew he had screwed up.

That's hilarious. :D

You could also try something like cyberscrub.
I'm pretty sure it deletes all this stuff plus it can wipe your HD if you're worried about somebody using recovery tools to find your deleted "business files" ;)

Peetster 06-27-2004 05:52 AM

My method now:

ctl-alt-del
enter

Lock-a-matic

I'm not concerned about porn, I just don't need people looking at things that do not concern them. I keep my business to myself.

I don't really care if anyone sees porn tracks on my computer, because I don't have much on there.......but, however, I do insist on using this method of locking your computer :) Works wonders, I'm sure Peetster agrees with me.

I have stuff on my computer I wouldn't want my parents to see, and it's not porn or anything. Just files, folders, whatever.

Easier way to Lock your computer:

Windows Key + L

Yeah, me too. It's annoying when they ask about the folders named "Downloaded Pr0n" and "Don't look in here".... I'm like, "Mom, it's just essays for school."

eyeronic 07-12-2004 07:48 AM

"if using win media player, clear the media library

Where exactly is this in the Regedit?

whelming1 09-28-2004 09:31 PM

Thanks for the address bar info. Very informative and appreciated.

RAGEAngel9 09-29-2004 09:58 AM

I lent my roommate my laptop once to do a presentation. After the presentation he was taking questions and wanted to show an image. When he went to open one, the open file thing came up in thumbnail mode... in my porn directory. He managed to laugh it off and blame it on me. Forever onward, he swears to triple check my computer before barrowing it again.

choskins 02-15-2005 08:46 AM

mrublaster is awesome. Thanks

lunchbox 02-15-2005 08:54 AM

don't let anyone use your pc, plain and simple. :-X

viejo gringo 02-16-2005 02:22 PM

---or just install the free CCLEANER...it will clean out everything at once and will also do the registry....

cleaner means crap cleaner...works great..

jonjon42 02-16-2005 04:01 PM

ccleaner is a good app, the only problem I can find with it is that if you don't know what you are doing, the registry fixer can do some damage.

dksuddeth 02-16-2005 05:52 PM

this wouldn't be an issue if you
a) had your own computer
b) didn't give your g/f or wife your user id/password
c) didn't give a damn if your wife or g/f found out you were looking at porn

haha thats hilarious... the same thing happened to one of my professors, whats worse is that many kids laughed at him and he quickly changed the topic and went on with lecture.

MontanaXVI 02-17-2005 06:15 PM

Another vote for Webroot's Window Washer runs whenever you want it, does not get in the way and does a great job of keeping the system tidy in general. My gf does not care that I look at porn I am a grown ass man. I built my computer I have 4 of them and she has the laptop I bought her for her studies when she decided to go back to school. I have always used WW for cleaning up junk in general but it does work well for you who are not allowed to have bewbies on your computer.

punx1325 02-17-2005 06:55 PM

You know mozilla should create a button that just clears anything that has to do with leaving a trace. That would make some peoples's lives so much easier.
