Firewall
Anyone know of a good free firewall other then zone alarm? I have been using zone alarm for a long time but its starting to get on my nerves. Randomly crashing or causing lag spikes while gaming online and that sort of thing. a fresh reinstall of it didnt help so i figure its about time to try something new. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

try Outpost. it's a little twitchy when you install it but if you get it right it's a lot better than ZA.

m0n0wall is great, but you still should have a software firewall as well. window's xp's firewall is more then sufficient with a hardware firewall.
i do recommend m0n0wall as your hardware firewall, i use it at home. |
Comodo firewall is outstanding, and free. Stable, pretty, and so far it tests the security pants off everyone else. (Windows-centric, of course) It will ask for more guidance than others during training, but only because it's strict; they chose to be leak-proof vs. avoiding support calls.

I have a router that works as a crappy firewall as well but i really want a software firewall. I dont exactly trust linksys to do anything right. Some programs i just want to block on my own. I will check out comodo and outpost. thanks for the help. =)

2nd for Comodo! It works extremely well, and once you get past the initial deluge of Allow/Deny (that comes with every firewall) it pretty much leaves you alone and just works.

actually, linksys will do a nice job unless some one is actively attacking you. but you still want a software firewall in case a computer inside your network gets infected.

comodo seems to be working great =) And yeah linksys works great... when its working right. That router crashes alot it randomly just decides to block everything or allow everything through untill i reboot it. luckly linksys is right on top of things and hasnt put out a firmware update for it in the last year and a half.

Linksys BEFSR41 along with Comodo has worked great for everything I need it to.
