bandwidth throttle?
I use my main computer to play games but whenever any of the other computers in my house start a download or just browse some image intensive webpage it takes all the bandwidth and kills my game. Is there a (free/cheap) program I can install client side that'll prevent this from happening? I've searched google but I've only found programs that install on a gateway computer but Im not running a gateway comp, just going into a router.

if you have a free old computer with 2 nic's you can, i use m0n0wall to shape all the traffic on my network. mine runs on a Pentium 2, 333mhz, with 64 megs of ram, although the log files say I've never peaked 32.

If you have a WRT54G and some spare time, I belive that you can throttle by MAC address in open-wrt or dd-wrt

yah what arch said,
with a wrt54g router and dd-wrt its pretty easy to setup network priority by type of traffic or by the computer making the traffic. wrt54gs look like they are going for about $50 on the internet... if you look at the dd-wrt website you can find which other routers support the firmware. |
Sweet I have a wrt54gs :) I'll check out DD-WRT and see if I can get something working

I've got a Cisco 871w ISR, it will do spectacular traffic shaping. You may not want to spend that much for a router though.
