I am on record here at the TFP (do a search) as saying the customer service from IBM has been lacking. However, I am also on record as an owner/seller of <a href="http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=1&catalogId=-840&langId=-1&categoryId=2035724>Thinkpads..

My experiences with the five Thinkpads I have owned have been positive. Go to the link I attempted above, you won't be dissapointed, even if you pay a dollar more.

Damn! I cannot make a clickable link!

Go to this place, cut and paste it since I am incapable of making it happen!

Sorry for my lack of "skillz". The Thinkpad might cost a bit more, but its features and quality make it worth the extra dollars. If not a Dell, I would not own a differnt brand than IBM for a notebook.

poof 06-13-2003 11:45 PM

Oh, the Dell would be a second choice. IBM is the better choice, and the customer service has been upgraded. Go Thinkpad.

poof 06-14-2003 12:34 AM

see the above http://. This was typed on a Thinkpad, notice the difference?
Never mind, it is awfully late, going to sleep.

Oh, the Thinkpad goes to sleep, one keystroke wakes it up.

Uhhh, if I play my cards right, a properly done stroke will wake Poof up, tommorrow.

Have a nice day.

I also Think some retailers will let you do custom laptops for like Compaq, HP, and Toshiba if you want to go that route... Of course you can always get a gaming PC with lower specs so it fits what you need... you are doing this so you can pcik the specs anyway...

Dell makes a great lappy with amazing service.

Acer makes a good custom laptop as well.

obelix 06-14-2003 05:15 PM

well i suppose it all depends on your budget, but i have friends who have purchased laptops from www.alienware.com www.voodoo.ca and www.powernotebooks.com . From what I have seen my buddy with the one from voodoo.ca seems to be the most satisfied with his and has had the fewest issues with it. In terms of price, powernotebooks.com will tend to have the best prices, but their products are not as aesthetically enhanced as the other two companies. i suggest you check out all three.

tinfoil 06-14-2003 07:43 PM

You may want to be carefull with latops from the sites obelix mentioned as many of them use desktop CPU's instead of mobile versions. This will lead to more heat and more weight due to larger heatsinks as well as decreased battery life. Voodoo and Power both offer Centrino versions though if battery life concerns you.

thanks all

fwiw, I have an A30 Thinkpad for sale, except mine has 512m ram and a nic. Make me an offer I can't refuse. It is not on Ebay, or for sale anywhere else. I just thought I could sell it to a TFP member. Let me know at reed_henry@yahoo.com.

Mods/Admins, If this is not a thing to do on the TFP, delete this. Just have something to sell, but, keeping it is OK too.

I have a prostar laptop. http://pro-star.com/ and it's been pretty good to me. They are a lot cheaper.
