Video Editing

Does anyone know of any programs that edit all the internet video files like avi. What i wanna be able to do is cut a video into sections and be able to link sections or cut sections. Also, I would like to be able to take screen captures and be able to make a jpg file.

Thanks. Any help would be greatly appreciated and feel free to add any other important info you think is helpful. I dont know much about any of this.

I assume you want it to be free?

When you say link sections or cut sections, I assume you mean you want to be able to combine and separate various video clips?

http://www.avid.com/freedv/

That's probably the best free one out there. Once you get beyond that, you're lookin' at around 600 bucks.

Actually, most video editors out there, if not all, should have the ability to cut and edit different pieces together. There are lots of cheap alternatives to the the 600$-1k pro editors.

Here's a handy link.

yes, that would be why I gave him a link to a free editor

There are plenty of free ones out there, but Avid is the best. Why bother with the others, especially when I'll put free Avid up against any of the cheapie editors out there. To get better than the free version of Avid you pretty much have to step up to Premiere/FCP/Avid Xpress DV. Now, that's quite a step up, and way more than he will need according to the original post, so I'd say stick with the free one.

If you have Windows XP SP2, you already own Windows Movie Maker, which trades features for simplicity. It's REAL easy to use. If your needs are few, you should check it out.

I'm not sure if the free version of Avid will allow you to export an image sequence (which is what you called "make a jpg"). VirtualDub can do it I think.

I'd get both products since they're free and use the best from both.

The academic price for Avid Pro is $299 (it's $1600+/- retail). So if you're a student, faculty or staff you can save quite a bit.

While the Free version may not let you export the image sequence you should still be able to make a digital cut and then just import it back into your computer I'll have to look that one up. I do know that anything done in FreeDV can not be imported into a pro setup.

I work on Avid Pro setups and DS/Nitris setups. I also do some FCP work. TBH, avid runs circles around FCP. So bascially if you do alot of this sort of work, you should listen to shakran's advice and go with the free version of Avid. The interface is extremely easy to use. Just make sure you pay attention to your tracks

Nothing wrong with the revival of an old thread for the sake of good information

Welcome to the forums, and that's a good chart BTW. Really shows you how much the big names have to offer (final cut, premiere, etc).
