Seen this?
Windows (Aero) vs Ubuntu Linux (Beryl)
HERE! Video quality isn't so hot,but the sound certainly is :) .......and the point of the vid is too. |
Heh, eye candy rocks

Yeah, both the Beryl and Compiz project are creating some really interesting things. The problem I see with all these videos that pop up (especially for Beryl) is that they focus so much on what is ultimately useless eyecandy and not on showing a balance between eyecandy and functional benefits.
Take flaming windows, for example. It looks neat, and then you think about it for a few seconds and realize, "I'd never want to work with that on a daily basis." I'd love to see someone make a video showing only the useful things Beryl or Compiz can do, without the "oooh, shiny flashy things!" factor that ultimately does more to convince people that it's a waste more than it being something useful. Which is ultimately the point: these projects ARE useful. But it doesn't seem anyone is making an effort to really show that. |
I concur. What's the point of trying to out-eye-candy Windoze? Why not show that they can create an effective + fancy + low-resource interface? Can they not?
|
Well, I think I could have been more clear with my previous post: they have created an effective + fancy + low-resource interface. In fact, the eye candy displayed in many beryl videos works quite well on systems that would have a hard time running Vista even without all the eye candy.
Problem is, the videos don't focus on any of the things most users would actually give a damn about: the simple, unobtrusive things. Those things are shown here and there, but the videos place too much focus on pointless features, like the flaming windows. |
One thing that impressed me with Compiz is that the hardware requirements weren't at all exotic. I was running it on an Inspiron 8200, 1.7Ghz P4m w/ Nvidia 4 go 440 (64MB) video. OSX requirements are even less exotic, running all the fancy visual bits on my aging Powerbook DVI (667 Mhz G4, Radeon 7500 w/ 32MB). I've not tried Beryl, but it looks posh. I wonder if its requirements are equally as light as Compiz.

Beryl is supposed to be a branch of Compiz so it should work... i think.
