comp noise
can anyone tell me why my cd burner is noisier when playing a cd than it is when burning one?
this thing (the new liteon 52x24x52) is unusually loud when Im watching a movie on a burnt cd, but whisper quiet when burning one. not that it matters much, I just use the Sony dvd drive to watch movies since its much, much quieter. just curious as to the reason for the difference is all. also, for those of you who are obsessive about noise escaping your case, I'd like to ask this: why? even the loudest case fans/cd drives/hd's I've ever heard (and I've heard and owned some of the loudest, like the liteon i mentioned above) really arent very loud, in comparison to say, normal conversational volume. I mean, personally, I like to be able to hear the low hum of my case fans, means the fuckers are working. I am almost obsessional about my fans. Hell, just the other day, I replaced the power supply fan coz its hum had changed, going about two notes higher than normal. I interpreted that to mean increased friction in the bearing (I do leave it on 24/7 and run it hard a good 6-12 every day). So I expect short fan life and replace them anytime the sound alters noticably. Just sensible and simple precaution, I think. In comparison to the devices they protect, I think fans are a bargain at twice the current prices. anyway, I was rambling. question was, what is the fascination/obsession with eliminating case noise? I just never got it.

The thing about case noise is this, many people cant stand having something making a lot of racket while say, going to sleep (one in your room) or while watching TV (one in the living room) or even just while playing games. Obviously you have not encountered some of the louder fans out there. My cuz's case sounds like a quite Vacume cleaner, and my friends sounds like a loud vacume. Each has a Black Label Delta for the HSF, and a few SUPER high RPM 120mm fans. The real kicker is the new Smart Fan by Thermal take (I think) My friend has this fan and its what sets his over the top.
CD/HDD/Normal Case Fans are nothing compared to the dB a good cooling solution can output. anyway, about the CD, are you burning at 52x when you burn? Also are you burning the whole CD? |

I am usually burning a full cd, but the fastest I burn at normally is 48x. I did burn one (the first one, that came with the drive) at 52, but havent seen nor therefore bought any more 52x media. in any case, the speed doesnt seem to affect the noise. Its loud no matter what.
as for case noise, believe me, Ive heard some loud fans, but then, I'm someone who sleeps with a fan on, coz I like the way white noise drowns out most other sound. So I guess its just a matter of perception.

For me, the fascination with computer noise is due to my profession...I'm a recording engineer/producer, and having a loud white noise source in the same room as my work is distracting and detracts from my ability to do the best job I can. Ideally, I'd have a machine room and just put the bastard elsewhere, but no such luck.
I walk a fine line at the moment...I hate the noise, but I'm scared of heat problems...every time I make a change for the cooling system, I make sure to monitor the system and CPU temp closely for a week or so before and after the change, to make sure things don't get too hot. Right now, the unfortunate truth is that my hard drives are louder than the super-quiet fans I have...they also create too much heat for the drive silencer/drive cooler combos I've been able to find so far, so that's not an option, and besides, those take 5 1/2" bays, and I'm all out. So, that's my justification...I think in my case, it'd piss me off anyway, but I have a genuine reason. ![]() MPEDrummer

I have 12 fans in mine, including 3 in the PSU and it bugs me just a little bit more everyday. The 3rd fan in the PSU, which is a full-speed intake, is going to be disconnected this weekend. From what I can tell, nearly all the fan noise comes from the two full-speed intakes on the PSU, so I'll easily drop 6dB by removing one of them.
On Tuesday this week, I spent a few hours taking the case apart and putting Dynamat on just about every piece of bare metal I could find; I even covered the insides on the unused drivebay covers. The front and back of the mobo tray got covered (that's a big piece of vibrating aluminum all by itself), and so did the PSU mounting plate in the back, the bottom of the case, the inside of the top panel (where three 120mm fans were vibrating it), both side panels, and even the back of the front bezel. I got rid of all the case hum, but those PSU fans are still spinning like crazy! Eventually I plan to go to watercooling, but for now I'd rather not spend the money.
