Miranda IM
Does anyone here use Miranda IM?
I've been looking into it and I really like a lot of what I see. I'm also really frustrated by a lot of what I see. On one hand, it is remarkably customizable - down to how many pixels contacts are indented by - but on the other hand, it is missing some very basic features, such as automatically connecting on startup. There are a TON of plugins and it's pretty much impossible, as far as I can tell, to figure out which ones are good. Miranda's support for AIM - which is the protocol I use most - seems to have some annoying issues, such as displaying URLs twice when someone sends them. Nonetheless, I can't help but look at Miranda and see something really promising. I've liked Gaim for quite awhile, but it doesn't really "fit" in Windows. Miranda does. It is also incredibly lightweight when compared to Gaim. I'm hoping there are some people here who use Miranda and can guide me toward some of the best plugins for it so that I can get reasonable functionality. I don't understand why Miranda doesn't seem to support rich text formatting automatically, but that's something that I'd really like to be able to add. I'd also like to add the OLD AIM smileys. I've found how to add the new ones, but not the old ones. Or, what other plugins do you think are good for Miranda? I want to like this application, but I'm running out of patience!

Miranda is amazing. i used to use it all the time, i had a custom background and all sorts of features... you can even make certain individuals view you as invisible, which you can't do with any other program that runs AIM... to my knowledge. i was running a portable version on my USB stick for a long while but something happened and i couldn't get it running again... but since I've been using GAIM. i use GAIM on my computer and on my USB stick now.. havn't used Miranda in over a year. currently installed i have aim 5.9, aim 6, and gaim installed.... i used to be a big trillian user too... but havn't touched that in like two years.... speaking of portable apps... i need to a good portable usb messenger i can use when i get on macs occasionally
i'm installing miranda now... i managed to customize my miranda well last time, i just got to remember what all i did... way to many settings!

hmm. I used this software once but it seemed to lack too much. I'm a big fan of trillian for now but the main one i use is msn and so many ppl use the custom icons to speak that i can't read what they say half the time haha! and then theres the voiceclips that aren't received so i have to stick with msn even though it rarely works at 100%. like right now, i can't get it back to connect but firefox is on and googletalk is on. FUCKING MSN!.. i think i WILL install this program now.

I use it exclusively.
Your point about the startup status is valid, but you must also remember that because of Miranda's architecture, this functionality could be easily implemented in a plugin (and in fact is, look up the StartupStatus plugin). I am not one for lots of plugins. I use the following: CPU: Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2500 @ 2.00GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 14 Stepping 8] [DEP enabled] [2 CPUs] Installed RAM: 1015 MBytes Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP [version: 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2] OS Languages: English/English | English/English [English, Farsi, Vietnamese, Armenian, Mongolian, Welsh, Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Galician, Divehi] Shell: Explorer.exe, Administrator privileges: Yes Free disk space on Miranda partition: 29034 MBytes Miranda path: C:\Program Files\Miranda IM Miranda IM version: 0.6.0 Unicode Build time: 21:53:52 on 28 December 2006 Profile size: 7,082.95 KBytes Profile creation date: 09 Jan 2007 at 04:57:46 Language pack: No language pack installed Nightly: No Unicode core: Yes Active Plugins (19): Aim.dll v.0.0.0.6 [28 Dec 2006] - AIM OSCAR Plugin - Version 6R chat.dll v.0.6.1.3 [28 Dec 2006] - Chat (Unicode) clist_classic.dll v.0.5.1.1 [28 Dec 2006] - Classic contact list (Unicode) dbx_3x.dll v.0.5.2.0 [28 Dec 2006] - Miranda database driver ICQJ.dll v.0.3.7.5 [28 Dec 2006] - IcqOscarJ Protocol (Unicode) import.dll v.0.9.2.2 [28 Dec 2006] - Import contacts and messages IRC.dll v.0.6.4.0 [28 Dec 2006] - IRC Protocol IRC2.dll v.0.6.4.0 [28 Dec 2006] - IRC Protocol jabber.dll v.0.6.0.2 [28 Dec 2006] - Jabber Protocol (Unicode) jabber2.dll v.0.6.0.2 [28 Dec 2006] - Jabber Protocol (Unicode) KeepStatus.dll v.0.0.2.85 [22 Jun 2006] - KeepStatus msn.dll v.0.6.0.2 [28 Dec 2006] - MSN Protocol (Unicode) msn2.dll v.0.6.0.2 [28 Dec 2006] - MSN Protocol (Unicode) png2dib.dll v.0.1.3.1 [28 Dec 2006] - PNG images processor srmm.dll v.3.0.0.0 [28 Dec 2006] - Send/Receive Messages (Unicode) StartupStatus.dll v.0.0.3.27 [15 Jun 2006] - StartupStatus VersionInfo.dll v.1.4.0.0 [28 Jan 2007] - Version Information Yahoo.dll v.0.3.0.10 [28 Dec 2006] - Yahoo Protocol Yahoo2.dll v.0.3.0.10 [28 Dec 2006] - Yahoo Protocol Inactive Plugins (0): Because each protocol keeps track of one account only, this is the reason I have IRC, IRC2, Jabber, Jabber2 etc. Yes, I thought the same thing as you have probably - "Why can't one protocol plugin keep track of n accounts?".. I've gotten use to it. Anyway, any questions, I am a fellow user. I've been using it for a few years now. Ask away.

I use miranda portable (available at portableapps.com) off a memory stick - it's a bit more stripped down and very good for it.

I'm working diligently (well, not really, but every now and then when I feel up to it ) on getting Miranda to work in a way that satisfies me. This is my latest issue... In Gaim, you can create what amounts to contact folders, where one alias is shown for a number of contacts. The order the contacts are placed in that alias determines the priority of each. For example, I could combine "John's" Jabber, AIM, and Yahoo contacts (in that order) all under the alias "John." If his Jabber contact is online and active when I double click on "John," that's the protocol it opens up. If the Jabber contact is offline, but the AIM contact is available, it would open that one. And so on. Do you know if this can be done with Miranda? I would guess it requires a different clist, and I notice you use the classic version, so I'm not sure if you'll know the answer to this.
