Large CD read problems

Whenever I have a CD with a large file burned on it (real large, like 600-700 megs), when I put it back in my CD drive, I cannot read it. Explorer will see the file present on the CD, but when I try to open it, it will hang. The CD spins up at a very slow speed, and will sit, apparently doing nothing, all day. On the few occasions when I can try to copy the file to the HDD to open it, it usually gets through most of the file before getting a "cyclic read error." What the hell gives? I am running Windows XP Pro, SP1. It worked before I did my biannual rebuild, but it sure isnt working now.

Any ideas?

Sometimes, when you burn a cd as a copy, cd-writers have a hard time reading it again. I don't know why. I've almost kicked the crap out of my computer until I figured it out. See if the disc will read in a read-only cd drive. Not one that records.

i'm pretty sure that was cuz of the crappy pc i have.

Its not the PC. The machine is nice. P4 2.4, 512 megs, radeon 8500 -- it isnt a lack of horsepower. It isnt a problem with a CD-writer, either. I tried it in both my CD writer and my normal CD drive.

Grrrr... this is so annoying.

Does this happen only with homemade CD files?

You could have I/O errors on the motherboard or a whole host of nasty things

Try the CD's at a friends house and see what happens
