LAN speed problems

I checked the speed of my LAN. It is only running at 10Mb/s. I have 10/100 cards in all the computers on my network and my router which is the Linksys WRT54g is a 10/100 router.

Why is it only running at 10 Mb/s, how can I enable it to run at 100 Mb/s?

Thanks.

edit:

The cards I was testing on were the following:

Intel(R) PRO/1000 CT Network Connection and
3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI NIC (3C905C-TX)

i just tossed a gigabit card into my server, it rocks...

but for your problem, you can force it under the advanced tab of the properties of the device in device manager. but they are usually pretty good at setting the speeds properly, even though you may have 2 10/100 cards, if the cable is not up to spec, or is getting interference.

Can you enforce the router to use 100mbit/Full Duplex? Also, go to the Device Manager (assuming Windows here because you didn't specify) and right click on the network cards and go to the properties. The settings there should allow you to enable 100mbit Full Duplex.

Let us know if it gets fixed.

What they said. If all are set to auto-negotiate then it's odd that multiple 10/100 cards would fail to negotiate 100Mbit. A problem on one system won't affect the link rate for the other.

Is your setup as simple as it sounds? Internet on the WAN side of the Linksys and your computers on the LAN side? Nothing incredibly long or convoluted, and no chance you're crossing the WAN connection?

Are you measuring throughput or watching Windows' connection balloonsw? (have to ask)

on my linksys sometimes it drops to 10mb, i unplug it, and plug it back in and it fixes the problem.

The only other thing i can think of aside from the above (forced mode, bounce router/switch etc), what's the quality of cable that you are using?

I've known damaged cables to cause a drop in speeds because the two ends can't negotiate at full duplex - some wires in the cable are damaged and prevent it. Just a thought.
