USB ports not recognized

I have a Compaq Presario 4000 with a 4 gig hard drive 256MB Ram standard system running Windows ME.

The problem I am have is that about a week ago my wife was checking her email and an error occured with the computer (sorry don't know exactly what it said was not home) and the computer froze. she shut the computer down aand the next day restarted it. When she did this it came up with the notice that there was new hardware found and to look for the best drivers. I have a usb keyboard, aftermarket 750MB Zip drive, and scanner that are all USB connections. We attempted to scan for the drivers and it found none and then came up with the message of the SEGreg Key was missing. The computer still runs fine and all but hte applications that use USB ports work. Now I have had to get a regulare serial port key board to keeping typing.

Could some one point me in the right direction and maybe get this problem resolved so I can use my USB applications again.

I searched Google for "SEGreg" and didn't find anything. Without more details it's difficult to troubleshoot.

You can try reinstalling ME over top of ME although I've had little success with this in the past.

Worst case, you can reinstall your system from scratch. Rename the existing WINDOWS folder to something like WINME so it's there as a backup.

well, add a usb card (for pci slots) and see if that fixes the problem.

if it does, it's the usb slots u have.

If it doesn't , "get" windows xp prof. When that's done just plug it un and i will guide you trhough it step by step.

Xp is very compatible with new hardware, ME isn't.

I got the problem fixed after doing some research on the net.

I had the message wrong it was SURegcreateKey failed. I fixed the problem by going into a backup file from before the problem started and restarting the computer with that file and everything came up working.

I would still like to know what caused the problem and how to stop it from happening again.

Any thoughts just respond.

I found some thought provoking ideas on Google: http://www.google.com/search?q=suregcreatekey.

That is where I got the help to solve the problem

I now would like to find out why this happened.

It seems that a lot of people are having this problem with all versions of Windows.

There's a lot of weird shit with Windows. It frustrates me to wonder "why" so I just fix it and go on my merry way.
