Ethernet connection causes sound problems?
 

Yes it does.

Apparently, when i am connected to the internet via ethernet cable the sound on my computer gets all poppy and skippy. It happens only when the ethernet is hooked up. It happens to all sound from the computer, regardless of source or application. I've had the computer for several months and never noticed because i wasn't hooked up via the ether. Now that i often am hooked up that way this is becoming a little annoying.

I've tried updating the drivers with no luck. Frankly, a problem as seemingly obscure as this is beyond my googling skills, since i've done several searches and all lead to dead ends. So i turn to the tfp in hopes that one of you might have an idea about how to fix this minor annoyance.

Windows XP Pro SP2
AMD Turion 64 Mobile - 2.2 GHz
2 Gig RAM
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC
Conexant AC-Link Audio

Change the soundcard IRQ or the NIC IRQ.
Google on the IRQ problems of nic and soundcard sharing.

Try leaving the cable plugged, but disabling the device. See if its a physical problem or a software problem. if its software, try boosting the priority of the application playing the music, that helps with skipping if you are under a large CPU load.

flat5 got it. There was some fax modem program sharing the IRQ with the audio device. I uninstalled said program and now rachmaninov sounds just fine. Thank you both very much for your assistance. :)
