AMD quad core
with next month being the month that Intell will bring out their quad cores, i'd imagine that AMD isn't that far behind. What kind of mother board will they be using the 939 or the AM2?

AMD will use the new Socket F platform/infrastructure for it's quad-core processors (Barcelona's). It basically an extension of the AM2 line.
Socket F employs support for the Fully Buffered DIMM. Processors planned for Socket F will also likely support DDR3 and other technologies, like XD-RAM. But when such RAM is used on an FB-DIMM, no motherboard or CPU change is necessary to support the new RAM, as all FB-DIMMs use the same socket regardless of the RAM employed. This overcomes the old drawback of the Hammer architecture, with its integrated memory controller necessitating the replacement of the (potentially very expensive) CPU to support a new memory type. Pictures of the new socket are below. ![]() ![]() ![]()

An update on AMD
Is anyone waiting on solid DDR3 from AMD. Let's say you can set on a Radeon HD 4870 X2 and a fast SSD. They seem like great upgrades. However, the first Phenoms didn't seem very good or very fast. So is there a smart buy for mobo and ram, or would you rather wait?

Right now I'm not banking on anything AMD. Intel is whipping the piss out of AMD on the performance side and while I haven't bothered reading on AMD's new stuff, I suspect it will still be sub-par.
Don't get me wrong, I grew up an AMD fan, but numbers are what I'm loyal to, not brands. I'm running a Q6600 @3.6GHz. It beats everything on the market right now, for stock speeds.
