file renamer?

Ok what im looking for is a free easy to use program that will help me rename a ton of files at once. Right now i have a ton of pictures with random names and i would like to rename them 1-100.jpg or whatever and put them in order of when they were made or modified last. Anyone know a free program that can do this for me in windows xp?

I'll give you two options -

If you want a headache, but enjoy having a huge amount of options at your disposal, then you will like PFrank, named after the programs author - (Peters Flexible Renaming Kit. Not P. Frank. :D) - http://www3.telus.net/pfrank/index.html

If you want it a little cleaner, and have less options at your disposal, then use ReNamer (I have no idea how they came up with that name) - http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~den4b/

You might want to try A.F.5 Rename Your Files 1.1

It's here:

Who needs a program? It can be done in unadorned Windows XP.
Right click and sort by date to get your files in the desired order.
Select all files. Right click on the first one and rename it as photo(1).jpg
The rest if your files will get renamed appropriately and in the order that they are currently sorted.

Of course this method is very limited, and there are lots of things that can't be done. If you need more flexibility I will second the recommendation for A.F. Rename Your Files.

ACDSee will do it. Not free, maybe, but within the trial period it should work.

Lupas Rename

Lupas Rename is what I use and I absolutely love it.

If you are feeling brave, you could always use something simple like a batch file, windows scripting... Particularly where you just want the files named numerically. it could be easily done in two steps, the first to create a file with all the file names, and then input that into a quick renaming batch file...

He speaks the truth - it's an easy way to get sequentially number files.
