Stupid Winamp question
So my new pc came with Music Match, I didn't install it because I never liked it.
I've always used Winamp. Problem is when I rip a cd it gets saved as a Music Match file. Question is how I do I make Winamp my default music player and convert my music to Winamp files? I've looked through Winamp preferances and couldn't find it, I'm sure I just missed it.

Making Winamp your default player is simple enough. I'm using Winamp 5, so if you have 2 or 3 it may not be identical, but I found a menu under General Preferences called File Types. You'll find a list of supported extensions and you can highlight the ones you want to use Winamp for, or use the 'All,' 'Audio Only,' 'Video Only,' or 'None' buttons to select the appropriate files.
As to the other, I can't really say for sure, since I don't know what file type MusicMatch uses. If it's an mpeg or ogg format (including mp3 or mp4) Winamp will have native support, but if it's some crazy proprietary thing you might need to re-encode the files. This can usually be accomplished by converting them back to .wav and then grabbing an encoder to re-compress them in the format of your choice.

last time i used music match, it defaulted to MP3, i think Brewmaniac may be confused because it has the icon on the default program musicmatch.

Martian, I did what you said but I ripped a cd after and the files still show up as Music Match files.
Dilbert1234567, yes all the files(songs) have Music Match icons and when I click on a song I get the register MM pop up. I know there has to be a way to change the MM files to winamp? I had this happen a couple computer ago and I was able to change them to Winamp. I just don't remember how.

you aren't actually changing the files, just the associations. what you need to do is go into the folder where the files are stored. then go to Tools, Folder Options. Click "File Types" tab. Then find ".mp3" or ".wmv" or whatever extension you want to be associated with Winamp. click the "Change" button and pick Winamp from the list. Done!
