Does anyone have a link to a free codec for DVD playback? I just want to watch DVDs on my desktop, and so far everything I've tried has either failed, or asked for money.

I don't really know much about media software, I just want something simple that lets me watch my movies, and I definitely don't want to have to pay for it. Is that so much to ask?

VLC can play just about everything out there, give that a try.

its free, multi platform, but a bit complex.

Yeah vlc is very good. No need for any codec packs, it just works out of the box.

It's also illegal to use in the United States, thanks to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. Complain to your representive today.

If anyone needs codec files to encode/decode actual multimedia content, a collection of them have ended up here. http://www.free-codecs.com/ . Be aware that while I have had great success with this package for more than a year, YMMV.
