My DVD/CDR drive just Quit

Hey everyone

Toshiba Satellite laptop
Intel Celeron 1.40GHz
512 ram
Windows XP home
Matshita DVD/CDRW

This problem happened before when I bought it but it was somehow fixed. Anyway yesterday she was working fine but now whenever I put in a CD or DVD the computer will not read the disc and says there is no disc in the drive.

The day before I was trying to Burn CD's but it would not read them as if they were there consistently and now it doesn't read anything at all. This is frustrating because I just got 6 new CD's in the mail and rip everything to my itunes. It's my only media device so I can't even check the music out (woh is me)

any help or suggestions

Does it spin up or just sit there dead?

How does it look from device manager? Any error codes?

Do you have a Windows OS or Linux CD? Will the laptop boot from the CD drive?

I had the same issue a while back and google cleared it up for me. Mine was fixed by playing with the registry keys. If you're not comfortable with that, you might want to find somebody who is or hire somebody to help you. You run the risk of, if you'll excuse my vernacular, ruining a lot of shit if you do something incorrectly.

My fix went something like this (care of jenk):
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/133595
Quote:
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.
I hope this helps you, but don't do it if you can't afford the time to fix it if something goes wrong.

Hey, no fair! Yep, if the drive spins and works outside of your current windows installation that's the fix I'd suggest as well.

If you hate regedit try copying and pasting this into notepad and save as a .reg file. (filters.reg or whatever) (filename.reg, not filename.reg.txt)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"LowerFilters"=-
"UpperFilters"=-
Double click the file and it'll ask if you want to merge the changes. Click yes and reboot.
