Running multiple workspaces on Windows
Hi,
I'm looking for software that would allow me to run multiple workspaces on my Windows XP machines. (Hopefully that's what they're called) I'm talking about the multiple desktops(software) you get when you run Linux. Thanks for the help. |

I think you want MS PowerToys for XP. The app in particular is the Virtual Desktop Manager.

I'm thinking....
It might be possible to use a windows terminal services client, to log into your machine and display this session in another window. Something to try. I think a second connection is "free". To get an independant desktop you'd have to use an alternate account though. A related but different thing - is to log in a second session with different privileges, ie I often use runas /profile /user:administrator "program.exe" or similar to get a window up with alternate details. ie I might open mail (as X) while doing development (logged in as Y). I saw something on a project called "Bochs" or "Bocks" (not sure) recently. A "freeware" VMware project. It'd be slow though .... it's software emulation. Finally.... it's worth checking for shareware desktop utilities on ZDnet, Tucows or similar. Just a thought. What you are asking for is actually a little different from what VMware, runas and so on, do. I know that I haven't really answered your question. I'm just giving you the stuff that I do know in case it helps a little. : | |
