CD/DVD repair

I wasn't sure what forum to put this in, please move me mods if this is the wrong place.

but i've come across a lot of my discs are damaged not the point where they won't play, but to the point where when i try to make backups (in case they really are destroyed) my DVD burner won't read certain ones. I was wondering if anyone knows a good tool (besides the toothpaste and toilet flushing examples) that actually work?

I've heard that discdoctor's are really great but i'm not sure if it's just the ones you can buy at any best buy store or what. There are about a millino products out there that claim to work, i was wondering if anyone had any first hand experience.

thanks!

What programs do you use? CloneDVD? Nero? I found that some of my discs while not readable by one program is readable by another. Same goes with DVD ROM/burners. My NEC ND3500 reads just about everything, except cracked discs. CloneDVD sometimes has trouble then I'd use DVDFab Platinum. Somehow the program is able to read discs that CloneDVD can't, it does take a lot longer (for DVDFab) to backup/rip.
