noobish firewire connection....

okay, i'm thinking of going out and buying a firewire cord... i just noticed i have that tiny litttttle baby firewire port on the back, and it's on the back of my other laptops, i never realized they had tiny firewire ports as opposed to the bigger ports.... cause i never looked behind the laptop

now, assuming i get one of these and hook it up between two laptops, i can access and send files between the two, correct? and i can use it to share a internet connection to, right??

once i get one... what all would i do to do this stuff?

Yeah, it's a 4-pin Firewire connection (the large one is 6). You can use it to network computers just like ethernet, and sometimes it's faster. Network it exactly like you would through the ethernet port, except use the IEEE 1394 port as the connection.

Oh, sorry. I forgot about answering. I'm a dick.

As far as connecting between computers with a regular network cable... well, it depends on what you mean by "regular." That cable you have running to your cable modem right now won't work. It's a regular network cable. You need a crossover ethernet cable to connect two machines directly with no network equipment in between. It crosses cables over (who'da thunk?) to make the inputs into outputs and vice versa, so each computer recognizes the other. $10 at RadioShack, $5 online. Again, network it exactly as if there were actually a router or switch in between. Piece of cake.

I think most NICs nowadays are capable of automatically switching to use a regular cable as if it were a crossover and vice versa. Not sure, but either way it couldn't hurt to try and maybe save you some time.
