I'll admit it, I'm unfamilar with how to install either Linux or Solaris OS onto computers or laptops.

I have a computer, and 2 laptop. All of them have Windows XP installed on it. So, what I want to do is install Solaris on one of my laptop but I don't have it on CD.

Would I be able to install Solaris X on my laptop?

Solaris 10 (not X.. it's not a Mac :P ), will *probably* work, but there isn't good laptop support out there for it yet (so I'm guessing a lot of the extra stuff won't work.. maybe even your touchpad).

I'd suggest either putting on Linux (which is more refined for a desktop user like yourself) or trying Solaris in a VMWare environment to see how you like it.

I'll agree with Latch on this. Solaris is quite finicky on the hardware it will run on. I would try Linux as there is quite a bit more that you can do with it on the desktop. Solaris 10 really isn't meant to be a desktop OS, though it can be used as one. That's why Sun makes the Java Desktop OS.

you can also try a live cd like knoppix to see how you like Linux.

Alrite, I'll go with Linux.

I was looking at http://www.linuxiso.org/ and I'm wondering which version is the best to go with?
