data copy problems
I just purchased a new computer running xp s2 media center on it. I backed up my pics , videos , songs ect on cd-rw from old computer now I am trying to put this stuff on the new computer but an error message comes up saying Data error (cyclic redundancy check). then I click ok and its done.. it wont let me copy the stuff.. I have tried 4 new cd's. I googled the error and I have seen where several people with the SP2 has that problem.. anyone heard of this or know of a way around it.. all I want to do is save my stuff I have had for 4 yrs

Look at the bottom of the CD and make sure it's clean and there isn't any physical damage to it.

Do any files copy? Same results with every CD? Do any other CD's work, even music CD's?

That's because the CDs were burned improperly. If I had to guess, they were burned at a higher speed than the old computer could properly handle. There are a couple of solutions to this problem:
1) Burn again, at a lower speed (for data, I keep it at 16x or lower... usually 8x) 2) Forget the CDs, buy a thumb drive, transfer files that way, or 3) Buy a crossover ethernet cable (about $10) and link the two computers directly, network one to the other, transfer files as needed. |
