Registering a domain (not a repost)

I searched the forums for info on this, but I really didn't find what I'm exactly looking for.

I went to whois.net and searched for my desired domain, it's available for registration. I clicked the register button and it took me to verio.com to register. I think the prices for registering are ok, and I know of other places where a domain can be registered, but I have a question about all that...

If I get a domain registered at verio, does this mean that I will have to choose one of Verio's hosting plans? Or will they (or another domain name registrar) allow me to specify where a domain should point to, being some other hosting service offered by someone else?

Thanks for the help everybody.

It's easiest to have the folks you buy the domain from host the A record. Did you look at http://www.netsol.com first?

Why is it easiest to have them host the A record? Is it absolutely necessary? By A record you mean nameserver.. which is basically to say where the domain points to, isn't it?

I took a look at netsol once you pointed me to it and it looked alright, but I think in the long run the pricing would be better for me through verio. I can't afford the hosting through verio yet, though.

I won't have a hosting solution for a while but I'd like to register these domain names while they are available. I know I wo'nt be able to afford any of verio's actually site hosting though. Am I going to need to pay somewhere for a name server too?

Thanks for helping again.. I know I'm a big newbie...

Not necessary, just usually cheaper in the long run. Also, ask your ISP how much to host the name.

Haven't got a host anywhere, and won't for a while.

Can I do something as simple as register a domain name so it's mine? Pass up all the name server stuff, hosting location, until later?

About nameservers.. is that something normally provided by... the domain registrar, or the place hosting your site? Does it cost money?

www.godaddy.com

www.zoneedit.com

free nameservers, you can point them wherever you wish

eNom is pretty good. I have had a domain with them for 3 years now and never had a problem. You can do pretty much what-ever you want with the domain once you purchase it through them.

I know from experience if you use totalnic.com to register your domain, you don't have to give them any hosting information and they will host your A record. It also has a nice web interface so that you can change your DNS information and in X hours your changes will be in effect. X hours represents the time for the changes to take effect on ALL DNS servers in the world. Typically for modifications this can take from 4 - 12 Hours.

Good luck in your venture.

in my experiance its usialy easy to make your DNS changes with a few e-mails when you switch hosts. Say you register your domain with company X,you then get hosting threw company Y. all you need to do is e-mail company X with your new DNS Info.

if you don't mind not having the toplevel domain, you can get a XXXXX.something.else domain from dyndns.org. they've got lots of toplevels to choose from, and its FREE :-)

i go for XXXXXX.ath.cx, but there's more
