Received Sony CD; wondering if it has rootkit
I just got this "Loop Euphoria 2006" CD from Sony, which I requested online because it boasts of loops that can be used for Acid. But soon after requested it, I saw someone mention something about rootkits being offered on free Sony discs. I can't find the particular thread, which is why I created this new one. I was wondering; does this CD have the rootkit? Should I destroy it? Or does anyone want it to do any research on it?
Also; say I have the rootkit on my computer. How would I know? And how would I get rid of it? Someone posted a link earlier but they didn't quote the article, and now it's archived on a pay site (boston herald I think). |
Go here, it'll help you figure out if it has the rootkit on it.

Well that CD isn't listed, and there are no warning labels etc, but I think I'm gonna try this out on my work computer before I try it on mine.

Want to see if you are infected? Directions - The sony rootkit hides all files starting with $sys$. By testing for this, you can easily see if you are infected with the sony DRM rootkit. 1. Right-click blank area of the Desktop 2. Select New 3. Select Text Document 4. The name should be highlighted. Name it anything starting with $sys$ and hit enter. For example: $sys$blah.txt 5. If the text document no longer appears on your desktop, then you have the rootkit installed. 6. Sue sony, profit, etc. |
