new ASUS issue

I recently bought a new mobo:

ASUS P4V8X-MX Socket 478 VIA P4M800 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131573

When I boot it goes to the ASUS splash screen (hit DEL to enter SETUP, etc.) and freezes there. At this point there is no response from the keyboard at all. This doesn't matter whether it is a PS2 keyboard or USB. I've reset the CMOS multiple times according to the directions in the manual (removed battery, changed jumper for from 5 secs ~ 5 min), reset jumper, reset battery, same result. I never even get to the memory checksum. All fans spin fine. Holding down DEL, F5, etc. does nothing while the system is booting. The mobo does give one beep when booting up.

I know my other components all work because I tried them in another rig and they worked fine. I'm thinking the issue may be an incompatible CPU. I have a P4 2.4 Ghz, but that's all the info I have on it. Actually, I have two of them, neither work with this mobo but both worked with the other rig.

Specs:
1x ASUS P4V8X-MX motherboard
1x 512 MB PC2700 333 RAM
1x 1GB PC2700 333 RAM
1x ATI Radeon 9800 AGP
1x 20 GB Western Digital HDD (unknown rpm)
1x 20 GB Maxtor HDD (unknown rpm)
2x P4 2.4 Ghz CPU (see above)
1x 500w PSU
1x SB Live sound card
1x DVD drive

I'll be calling ASUS tech suport when I get home from work, I just wanted to see if you guys could help out in the interim. Thanks.

Describe the beep it gives you. Is it a normal POST beep? (single, short beep) or does it sound a bit like morse code? Is it long or short?

Assuming there's no beep code, my guess would be a board fault - you got one that was made on a Friday. Just return it, get a replacement and see if that fixes the problem.

Break the computer down in its most basic setup:

Mobo
2 stick of ram
power

Should give you some indiciation of post result through beeps and the manual will tell you what each one means

i've had this happen to me just recently.. was a different mobo tho.. a8n-sli.. i have 2 sata, and 1 ide hdd's in my system and just added another ide.. system hung just before going into the bios..

i originally had the 2 ide hdd's as cable select for the jumpers and it would hang.. i then switched the 2 from CS to slave and master.. had no issues after that.

The beep is a single, short beep.

As far as I can remember, the HDDs are set for slave and master, but I am not sure. I'll check that too when I get home.

Update to the latest bios
There is a fix for unstable system update
Also get the newest release of the Via Chipset Drivers

Your CPU should be supported
ASUS shows it is supported here After the bios update
