are yahoo/hotmail email addresses allowed?

I was telling a friend about this forum, and when he went to sign up, he got "The administrator has banned your email address. To contact the administrator click here"....he got that message with his yahoo and hotmail accounts. I know he's never been here before, and isn't the kind of troublemaker to warrant a banning anywhere, so is it just because these types of accounts aren't allowed? if a mod/admin wants I'll be more than happy to provide you with his yahoo email to see if it actually was banned. thanks!

we're cracking down on people using free, disposable email addresses to register their usernames. yahoo and hotmail are prime examples. tell your friend to spend the few bucks it takes to get a decent email account at one of the many providers out there, or simply get one through his own ISP.

a quick postscript:

this crackdown will not affect those who have already registered their accounts.

May I ask why? Many people, when they first come across a board that they don't really know about, would be uncomfortable using their primary email address. I mean, the board has a porn component, and they might think that they'll start getting even more porn spam. So, they use a free Yahoo mail account. Perhaps later, they switch over.

On the other hand, if free email addresses are being abused, perhaps this is a reasonable approach; I'm not a moderator, so I haven't seen the problems.

Perhaps a clearer message, like "This board does not accept {address}.com addresses. To contact the administrator click here."?

Does this include AOL accounts? My brother can't get on and I think it is the same thing.

phredgreen 06-17-2004 07:22 AM

you got it, choskins. tell your brother to shell out a coupla bucks and get an email address that isn't gonna sell his information to spammers.
