I'd be for it... HW and SW are very different... or rather support and implementation are different...

I'm in... for the reasons mentioned above.

Programming stuff is different than "What's the best video card?" or "I'm new at Linux, what do I do?"

Then wouldn't a poll be appropriate?

This thread is to determine the number of people who would contribute, not the number of people who would lurk, so a poll wouldn't be a very accurate representation.

I'd help where I could, but probably ask a fair amount of C++ debugging help come Data Structures time...

And I agree that programming and computers are two subject that are unrelated most of the time. With the exception that you have to use a computer to compile and run.

But of course I would love a programming forum!

I'm currently a Computer Science major and am mostly diving into C++ with quite a bit of Java; but I also know a little Visual Basic and MIPS (yeah, its next to useless anymore :P)

In the near future I am hoping to learn a bit of Perl, DirectX, and C#.

My concern, and the reason for this thread to begin with, is that any programming-related posts in Tilted Computers are drowned out by the swamp of tech questions, virus alerts, and hardware-related comments in Tilted Computers. Programming discussion is really quite different than general computer discussion, and to group them together is akin to merging Tilted Motors and Tilted Traveling.
Well, the way I see it, programming (to be broad here) is very difficult to discuss and help with, unless people have LARGE amounts of experience, or unless the questions are quite simple or general.

For example, I could discuss a solution to a particular problem with <x> app, but if one doesn't know the API of the toolkit used then it's quite difficult to help.

And the languages people know are quite widely varying in style: C, assembly (take your pick), lisp, haskell, Java, python, Visual Basic, etc.

As of yet, TFP does not really have that many active members (I think maybe 3,000 or 4,000? who post at least once a week), and only a small percentage of that number knows some amount of programming. After all, this is a forum about Life.

It's also an interest thing. Do many of you care to discuss proper programming? Techniques to improve programming style? Do you have time to figure out someone else's obscure problem?

I think the fact that ~27 people, at this point, have noticed and quipped something in this thread, is a real indicator of how many people might actually attend to the proposed Tilted Programming forum.

Maybe at some point in the future it'd be worthwhile. That's my take on it.

hi oberon, lisp and haskell are actually pretty similar ... maybe a nice topic for tilted programming ?

I'm for the programming forum ... always nice to see people having orignal ideas and being busy with projects.

a programming forum would be great....The computers forum is definitely not the place for programming questions. I think if it were available far more than 26 people would be regular visitors and posters.

To throw in my completely new 2 cents, I'd be all about a programming forum. I always need more resources for coding problems, my systems programming class has been known to kick my ass at times.

Vote yes on proposition Tilted programming.

Yes, I show my support for the programming forum.

There's only so much you can learn from a book.

Plus I need someone to debug my no0b perl scripts.
